Yay, Vaan! ♥ I love that kid. When my best friend was playing the game, she dissed on him and called him an idiot all the time, but I loved him! So...
a. I love Vaan because he's such a kid, trying to be grown up, trying to achieve his dreams and figure himself out. He puts all his faith in hero figures like his older brother, and when those people fail, he realizes he has to grow up, so he starts trying to be a warrior and trying to stand up for what's right, and he winds up getting in trouble. But it's admirable to want to reach for the stars, and it's normal to make mistakes along the way. b. He can be a tiny bit dense. As much as I think naïvete can be cute, it can cross the threshold into outright stupidity, and sometimes, that's what Vaan does. He doesn't know nearly enough about the world, and walks around with this belief that he'll be able to change it without understanding what he's trying to change
( ... )
I love him too, he's so...non stereotypical and at the same time so normal. Like...he's unique because they didn't try to make him super angsty, or anything. Haha and Balthier and him have one of the most convincing adult-kid interactions I've seen. I felt him and Ashe were super forced. Like...he's so much younger than her mentally, and like you said, the royal elegance does not mix.
He wasn't mopey, like Squall, or a total brash loudmouth like Tidus, but he had dark spots in his past. I think they had him work through his Reks issues convincingly.
Ashe and Vaan together would not happen. As friends, yes, but only because they shared an adventure; if they met under any other circumstances, they would be ambivalent toward each other and never really interact much. There's no way Vaan's about to catch up to her mentally, even after what they've been through; I mean, at the end of FFXII, Vaan's grown up, but he's still a little silly and has these high-flying dreams that Ashe would probably just shake off as childish nonsense.
So glad there's another Vaan lover! My best friend and my brother both hate on him, and I'm like, no! Love the little chocobo-head! :x
