When you play the game of thrones, you win or you cry over your favorite characters

Well, since I review fanfics in here, I may as well extend the same courtesy - if you can call my rambling reviews a courtesy - to published novels. So, because I just finished A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, that's gonna be the one I talk about. I'll try to refrain from spoilers, though I don't promise that more minor ones won't slip ( Read more... )

*hisses at you* I've wanted to read the Song of Ice and Fire series forever and I can't get my library to freaking get it!!!!!

*is jealous. So very, very jealous*

Since I can't read the review I'll just ask you (I respect your opinion)- do you think it's good enough to buy outright if the freakin' library of suck continues not to bow to my wishes?

Oh, believe me: this is a book I intend on buying. In paperback, because hardcover books are far too expensive for me to shell out, but definitely intend on buying it. If the characters didn't sell me on the story, Martin's ability to weave a coherent plot, full of intrigue and mystery, without leaving too many loose ends or gaps made me realize that I could easily fangirl all over this series.

In short, I think it's worthy. I recommend it highly enough to suggest buying it if you can't get a library copy, though I really want to reiterate something I said in the post: if you don't like depressing stories, especially ones in which main characters kick the bucket, you won't like A Game of Thrones. But I'm sure you're safe on that count. ^_^

*check her library catelog again* I stand corrected- they have the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th volumes of the Song of Ice and Fire series...

... which helps me exactly... not at all ;_;

That's it- screw them! I guess I'm just gonna have to buy it. And I do actually love depressing books with lots of character. I'm the kind of really weird person who'll specifically sometimes watch/read things just because I know they'll make me bawl like a baby. And I did know to expect that as the friend of mine who actually first told me about the story basically spoiled/enticed me by saying, "Yeah, at the end of the first book pretty much everyone who was a main character is dead and we have a whole new group of main characters after that"

He definitely knew how to get me to want to read a book ^_^
