So my boyfriend and I have been living in Dunedin for about a month, and now he's going back up to Wellington for a week or so to help his mother with landscaping. This means I'll be alone in a city where I know no one but him. I'm determined not to be bored, so I was wondering: What are the cool spots in town that a newcomer might have missed? I'm so sorry I didn't approve this for posting soner- I keep forgeting to check my email account that these things go to. I'll be changing the settings on the community soon I think to avoid it happening again.

Hope you found some stuff to do & that others will have some good suggestions too. Can't actually think of anything myself off the top of my head. Do you have a car? That would make a difference to suggestions I'd make, when my brain switches on again, that is.

Once again, sorry!

No worries! Thanks for approving it. :)

I don't have a car, so I pretty much rely on walking or the bus.

I might add you actually if you don't mind - you sound interesting. I rarely use lj at the moment, but that may change at some point!

Completely random suggestion: the butterfly house at the museum is actually pretty neat. If expensive. WTF, I say. Ten bucks for butterflies? I paid like two quid for butterflies in Stratford-upon-Avon! Still, if you and your boy want to go pretend to be small children for a couple of hours, the whole of Discovery World can be fairly amusing. Although I discovered the creepy giant fish they used to have there is gone. SO MUCH SUCK.

...otherwise, er. I haven't been in Dunedin properly in ages (I was in town Saturday, but that was mostly to meet a friend at Apsara for lunch and HUNT BUTTERFLIES). And personally the most interesting things I found to do while a student there for four years involved Larnach Castle. And that aquarium out around Portobello I never actually went to. So...um. Damn. I'm worse than useless. Welcome to New Zealand, anyway! :D

They got rid of the big creepy fish? *Gasp* How dare they, before I got to see them? We are totally into pretending to be children, though, so I will check that out.

Thanks!

Well they didn't so much "get rid of" him as he died...

There are some other really interesting fish in his tank now!

they did NOT get rid of the fish! it DIED!!!!!!!!!!!!! there is heaps to do here. I agree about Larnach Castle. I agree about the Aquarium. I agree about the entire Museum actually... also, there is the Art Gallery which changes exhibitions often. There is the Early Settlers museum which i am hearing great things about of late but have not quite got there. The Salt Water pool at St Clair is worth a dip if you are feeling sporty.. climbing up from Bethunes Gully to the top of Mt Cargill apparently takes just a couple/few hours return, and you can adventure around what is left of the organ pipes. There are lots of great outdoor places you can get to on various bus routes and just a bit of walking. Lots of waterfalls, views etc. The upper Botanic Gardens are a haven of tracks leading to even more beautiful parts of the garden. Woodhaugh Gardens is great, at the end of George St. So is Chingford Park, at the end of North East Valley...Ovleston (sp?) is a historic home right in the Centre of town virutally, Royal Terrace. First Church and ( ... )

If you're looking for everyday activities rather than tourist attractions, how about Moana Pools, St Kilda beach with the playground with dinosaurs in it (and a train!), or a walk along one of the many tracks around Dunedin? (Maps in the visitors centre.) Op-shopping in South Dunedin is also a good way to kill an afternoon.
