Maybe I should entitle all commentaries on the million dollar gems of wisdom from our dear million dollar gahmen as "Something STupid" (Haha STupid...get it? ;)

MORE than 30,000 jobs will be created this year - enough to absorb the pool of fresh graduates and new job-seekers, Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang said yesterday ( Read more... )

Last line: "this will result in more job losses"... really? hmmm. So if no one is here to do the jobs that Singaporeans don't want to do, there will be less jobs? huh? what?
Also, I think they're calculating job gains and job losses separately. That is, job gains for this year are expected to be 30,000. New hires only, I'd suppose. At the same time, projected job losses are expected to exceed 30,000. So if you aren't afraid of maths (like many people are) and can do your sums, that probably means net Zero or net loss of jobs. Of course the govt can't predict who will have a job and who won't, but maybe it's likely that firms will hire fresh grads because they can pay them less than old-timers?

I suppose you should see it as not "you were guaranteed a job" but "there are suffiicent jobs out there floating around so if you are good enough or aggressive in the job search enough, you will find a job". Retrenched people will be a serious competitor but you know, see it from another perspective, not all retrenched people are really retrenched because times are bad but because the company has been thinking of firing them already due to the disparity in productivity and pay. This is gathered from conversation with relevant management personals. And if the young grad is to take on jobs with lower pay requirement or not fussy with the lower entry level, it is still a competitive edge.

Hey, the government had to thread a thin line between on one hand, make sure the populaiton don't loose hope (or the cynic may say: don't dislike the government) but also want the population to take the opportunity to self-improve and increase their competitiveness.

from conversation with "relevant management personals (sic)", I can tell you that during retrenchments, sometimes the most productive individuals (productivity proportionate to pay) are the ones asked to leave, whereas less proportionately productive individuals who are (1) known as potential troublemakers or (2) known ass-kissers retain their jobs ( ... )

Haha I hope my ST scholar friend isn't reading this now ;)

Well no I don't blame the journalists. They're just reporting what those brainiacs up there say or what, did you really think they have the freedom to write about what they really think? ;)
