FWIW (probably not much), I would not apply for any job that is worse than the current one. A just-as-bad job in LA is at least in LA. And yes, job people can smell desperation, and it's almost always better to job-hunt while employed than unemployed, or so people who know more than I tell me.
I'd look for any old job, one that makes you enough money to afford living and whatnot... it would get you out there, where job hunting in earnest is easier. I know how hard it is to find something reasonable when you're several states away. I found that people weren't calling me back when I sent my resume because I had an out of state number, even though I was more than qualified for the job I applied for.
I don't hate you because you're leaving now that I've just gotten back... I hate you because you're beautiful. =P
