I just finished Mockingjay. Disjointed thoughts of the series below. Major spoilers for all of the Hunger Games Trilogy, Harry Potter and mentions of His Dark Materials.
I spent basically all of Mockingjay waiting for Cinna to come back and kick everybody's ass. I never quite got over that, honestly.
I agree about the blah-ness of the epilogue. I liked that it had a kind of bittersweet feeling to it, but I just didn't find it interesting after all the BLOWING STUFF UP ACTION of the rest of the series. And I always liked Gale more than Peeta, which I guess probably has something to do with it. Babies ever after is just not really my cup of tea, regardless of whether or not it was making a point.
I spent basically all of Mockingjay waiting for Cinna to come back and kick everybody's ass. This sounds like the plot of the best fix-it crack fic ever. AND YES, HE SHOULD HAVE, WITH GAY CAPITAL REBELS IN FABULOUS OUTFITS.
And your right, even if Katniss earned her happyish ending, the whole 'and them we had babies' ending is pretty eye rolling.
I think it was smart of Collins to just give us what we needed to know, rather than try to explain the verse in ordered, precise detail. True, because there is nothing worse then pages and pages of info dump. 'Girl with the dragon tattoo', for example, has far too much info on everything.
But that hasn't stopped me from over thinking what sector is which.
Haymitch is one of the most fleshed out side characters I've read in a long time, and while not likeable, is fascinating and not easily defined.
That whole scene with Buttercup was amazing, and was what really set me off about Prim. Well that and Peeta and the primrose bush. (Off topic Snow and his roses is one of the best uses of a flower motif ever).
Oh Cinna. The prep team survives but not him? Travesty.
I nominate Mr. Reed Diamond for the role of Boggs, action-man extraordinaire (seriously, the description on the book just made go all, "REED!")
I was expecting Cinna to be "SURPRISE, I'M NOT REALLY DEAD" when they've reached the Capital. lol.
I was sort of rooting for Gale (just Gale, though. Not in a shippy kind of way) and was a bit disappointed when we didn't get to see what happened to him after that. The epilogue was a bit meh for me. I would have been happier if Collins just ended the series with "Real."
Haha even though Boggs has like the worst time ever? I can see that, and I might need to add that to the fantasy cast I've been creating in my head all day.
I was kind of hoping for that too, but no dice. :(
I honestly didn't know if both Gale and Peeta would even live by the end of the book. Your right, there could have been more resolution then 'Oh btw, Gale's in district 2'.
I totally agree about the epilogue. Why cheapen an awesome ending with 'and then we had babies'?

I hated the HP epilogue and thought that it kinda drew away from the awesomeness of the book. :|
