I've been a thinking about my fanfic, about the quality of fanfic, and contemporary fiction.

Mostly, I've been thinking about subtext. Because, lets face it, some of the most awesome bits of TV is the subtext (and not just the homoerotic kind).

cut for mumblings about writing )

meta back ya'll, fake footnotes, writers insanity

"Paul's Case" is brilliant, and the approximately one hour long film of it made for The American Short Story Series is as well. I believe that the part of Paul was played by Eric Roberts when he was much younger. It's incredibly sad, but then Cather wasn't precisely a humorist. I don't recall many chuckles while reading either "My Antonia" or "O Pioneers." For anyone who is unaware of the story, it's well worth reading.

I guess a lot of folks read the story in high school, but I read it in a college gay and lesbian lit class, as an example of a text with not-so thinly veiled subtext about Paul's sexuality.

But I'm gonna check out the film if I can.

But I recently re-read it, and depressing content aside, is really well crafted. The sentence arraignment and her descriptions are incredible.
