I've been in a massive re-watch, also, and I didnt enjoy S4 much, either. Other than Cas, the Angels are loathsome, and the brothers kicking the shit out of each other, week after week, just wasn't my idea of good TV. I do prefer Ruby 2.0, though. There's just something about Katie Cassidy that doesn't appeal to me. There are a few seasons when I count on the funny episodes, and my beloved MOTWs, to keep me watching.
Though always a fan, those 'middle seasons just about did me in. I've found 9, 10, and 11 give me the same joy as 1, 2, and 3, though, so I have high hopes for 12. My only misgivings are that the writers seem to be hell bent on this not ending well. I keep saying I'm going to stop watching, before I have to see that, but here I am, 12 years in.
I kind of feel like Katie set the tone for how Ruby should act? She was so bitchy and snarky, but in a fun way. Ruby 2.0 lost all of that for me - but in the end, tomatoe-tomatoh, we both enjoy the same show :D
In the recent years, I've severely backed off my investment in the show's quality ... even joking with some folks that we are Team Lowered Expectations ... the upside is this means even when things don't click for me, I'm like 'eh, okay, that happened' and move on. It's helped a lot with sticking with the show. I mean, who doesn't love watching J2 on screen? Seeing what all Sam and Dean get up to? This is why soap operas last for decades, because folks are invested in the drama and the characters. I don't plan to give up any time soon :D
Doesn't Sam say something to Dean about how he's was clearing up John's messes even then? I can't help but wonder if when we see Mary next season, Dean will still do this in some way, to 'fix' things for her.
I always say I'm going to do a re-watch then never do. But one day I will, I really really will!!! (and yes, I remember season 4 being a very painful time for me as a viewer, so much bickering and nastiness between the boys. But there were some strong episodes in there too!)
I had never noticed it before! And I know I've watched this ep quite a few times. These lil things are the fun parts of rewatching. I started it a few months ago when I was dead bored, had just seriously downgraded my cable package, and was lost on what to watch. I think I'd just come back from Pittcon, too, so I was in the spirit ... it's been fun, certainly. Though I'm not letting myself skip ANY episodes. I kind of just want to relive it all and remember - I have a terrible memory on some of these things, where specific details stick out SO CLEARLY, but others just slip right past.
I'm very interested to see how they treat Mary - as in, I worry about it but also hope that it'll be surprisingly awesome :D
I'll be in a similar position soon too (I just brought my first apartment and I'll be moving in soon, so no cable for me anymore either) so a re-watch is a great idea. And I love your no skips rule - I might just do that too!!!
And yes, I'm in the same boat with Mary. I've been good with spoilers so far this season, so I don't know what they have in store, but it's very much nervous excitement as to what they're planning. But to be honest, I'm not even sure what I want to see, or what I don't...
It's interesting to find out how little you can survive on these days, especially with all the extra gadgets around. I have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime ... and then got a Chromecast for Christmas. What the hell would I need to pay $1750+/month for 200+ TV channels?? My family all think I'm insane to have done it - they're so into having the best and most techno stuff that they find it odd I'd go in the other direction. Just because I CAN afford to have all of it, doesn't mean I really need to/should.
Anyway! It'll be great to finally use up all the DVDs and such lying around! I own so many TV shows but never watch them, so here I go!
Mary could be a very lovely thing to play with, but I also thought the same for Chuck/God this last season and ended up not liking it much at all. I know we all have our own opinions, so we'll just have to see how it pans out :D
I never rewatched S4, because I was so fucking angry watching it. It was the start of the Sam Winchester character assassination imo. That said, the big mythology arc was way, way better than S5 where it's all over the place. Like, Lucifer and the Horsemen don't matter much, and they're all defeated really easily, all things considered. But yeah, Zachariah was like the last good villain of the show... which is a little bit sad lol
Before a rewatch, I should watch season 11. I stopped after the Baby episode and... I don't know, I love that show but sometimes it drives me crazy :p
I'm obviously masochistic because I'm making myself what all the episodes, no skips! lol
I always liked Zachariah and his arc ... and I feel like rewatching it now, after seeing another 5-6 seasons of bad guys, has really elevated my opinion of him. And yeah, you're right about how easy the Four Horsemen are, now that I think of it ... though I do remember being pissed at the time re: Pestilence because the characterization and delivery was SO GOOD.
The one thing that always stands out for me about Season 4...SAM'S HAIR. UNF. It was perfect then. Seriously. Ideal Sam!hair for me.
And Season 5 is just...utter perfection. We'll always have that to look back on. Some shows never achieve a season like that in their short runs, so I'm grateful we got to have it (and watch it over and over and over)
It has been fun watching Sam evovle (physically) over the last few seasons! Unfortunately he's getting to the too-beefy stage. But I was able to enjoy him only partly beefy with excellent hair :D
I'm already up to episode 16 and have only hated getting through one episode - Sam Interrupted. I remember it bothering me when it aired, and I've pretty much never rewatched. But that's just my own personal knee-jerk reaction to the mental ward setting.
You know it's funny, I didn't like Gen's Ruby the first time I watched season 4, and that was the first season I started watching it online, when I found out I could watch it online and not have to wait 'til it got aired over here, and I still didn't like her when I got season 4 on dvd
( ... )
I have definitely grown to enjoy Gen, herself, but I still can't get into the character. I just don't think she did a very good job in connecting with the character, or in carrying through the sass that Katie brought to the role. If it wasn't just a reincarnation of an established character, then that's fine! I could live with that. But to me, I can't get past the huge differences in the two women and performances.
Cas is such a waste of time, in my opinion. I enjoyed him fine early on, but he's really been wasting so much still being around. It's not a personal thing at all - I enjoy Misha and the role/interaction he has with fandom, always laugh at his vids and con panels, etc. - but I just can't care about that character anymore.
Gosh, I'm going to have a brand new appreciation for Dean/Pie. OTP FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
