This is exactly how it should have ended. Sam POV, the brothers reunited, but still the fear over what's to come. Glad you were spoiled if it led to this. :)

Yes! I think it would have been more heart-wrenching ... Sam's despair, the hug, Dean seeming okay, and then his black eyes.

Yes! Exactly. I wish it had happened like this. Almost in the same vein as the scene of Sam's shadow outside Lisa's house in Swan Song. I think it would have been more poignant. We'd get that rush of 'yay brotherly moment' before the shock of '...oh shit'. :P
