The word "kiss" comes from the Old English "cyssan" (to kiss), in turn from "coss" (a kiss), and is defined as "touching with the lips." For most of the Western world, kissing is a form of affection. This is unlike other parts of the world where kissing is seen as a form of respecting others.

lol Laura I feel like I'm reading one of those science journals (and hey, it's one one of my favourite subjects ^^), go you :)

Is it even a learned technique, or are humans simply born with the knowledge of it?
I think the desire to kiss is instinctive because the urge sometimes comes out of nowhere and surprises you, like it's some other force ebbing you on (you know all those times where you did not originally intend to kiss someone and yet still find yourself post-makeout? and all those "it just happened" explanations?).

However, I think the amount of skill in the act of smooching is learned.

(Your boob essay was excellent as well btw, meant to comment but after like paragraph two I was feeling creeped out and somewhat perverted... ;D)

True, but boobs are so easily associated with the guys (and girls) that obsess over them in an erotic way.
