I benched Merlin because five episodes in I realized I don't like a single character on this show and not a second of any scene whatsoever made me feel anything other than boredom. So, yeah. I might catch up with the rest of the season one day, but for now -- so long, extremely boring show ( Read more... )

I think if Harry Lennix's character wasn't there (and played so well by him), the whole thing would completely fall apart.

Yeah, so far Boyd is the single character I liked. He reminded me of Alias's Dixon.

I actually don't know what I feel re: Dollhouse. I didn't have any type of visceral reaction at all, so I can't even say that I hated it.

re: LotS [can't call it just "Legend", 'cause that's RDA in the West for me! *g*] -- the way you said I was gonna hate it, I was truly expecting something very video-game/Lord of the Rings-y boring. But I kind of instantly loved both Kahlan and Richard? Individually and as a couple/partnership/whatever. I was SAD when I realized there wasn't an episode this weekend! Hee.

Okay, so on LotS, I HATE the Kahlan/Richard thing, and love the way they film the fighting sequences (the hair, it's so pretty in slo-mo!), so we're not exactly seeing eye to eye on that one. Well, except for New Zealand, because Hi! Pretty!

But your thoughts on Dollhouse, on the other hand, I feel like I could have written. That was Joss? Really? Because I had at most a couple of flashes of "oh yeah, Joss Whedon directed this" (some of the scenes in the office reminded me of Wolfram and Hart), but never "oh yeah, Joss Whedon wrote this". That was, for me, the biggest disappointment. Because usually, a Joss show is at the very least saved by clever dialog. And this had nothing even approaching cleverness.

I loooove can't be together stories. Really, all of my favorite couples at some point had something bigger than life keeping them apart. And it helps that I instantly loved both Kahlan and Richard, and I instantly bought that they liked each other. Is it cheesy? Oh, extremely. But it's my kink and I'm glad someone is feeding it. Hee.

As for slow motion, it's not just on this particular show, I hate it on principle. I really don't understand need for slowing time unless it's plot-related -- and since 99% it's just stylistic choice, it actually takes me out of the narrative and I suddenly SEE that there is a camera and an assistant DP changing shutter speeds.

I had several moments of going "JOSS WROTE THIS WHAT WHAT NOW?" re: dialog. And it was so very sad that not a single line made me laugh. Bah. I want to hope it gets better, but it's HARD.

Ugh, I can't stand external factors interference, it's the major reason I hate Buffy/Angel ("oh no, I'll lose my soul!") and Veronica/Duncan ("oh no, you're my sister!"). Also, I have absolutely no interest in people who are in love so instantaneously. I mean, what do they even know about each other? Which is another thing all those three couples have in common.

The next Dollhouse episode is supposedly better? I don't know, I keep thinking about The Train Job and how it's probably the worst of all the Firefly episodes because Fox forced a new pilot on them. Maybe this will be the same?

I don't have a problem with characters being in love instantly -- one of my favorite couples ever is Max/Logan in Dark Angel and, same as I did with Richard/Kahlan -- I felt the actors had enough chemistry to sell me the idea that they're into each other from the get go. Also, there's the fact that I truly really love everything that's pre-relationship TONS BETTER than actual relationship -- so the fact that they can't be together means I'll get more of the pre-stuff. :)

I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but I've read that the next Dollhouse ep is supposedly better as well. I saw Firefly in the proper order [Fox Latin actually aired it that way here], but now that you mention it, yeah, it does make sense, The Train Job is indeed their worst ep -- very possibly because it was worked into a pilot. Hmmm.

I love LotS and all its cheesiness. And it's been awhile since the OTP of a show caught my interest right away and didn't annoy me at all. Plus, I think the writers are kinda really decent at writing their relationship? They already made out and look, a genuine reason for not being together. Others shows: please take note.

And just word on everything re: Dollhouse. I keep seeing people being all "wah wah wah It's just the Pilot. Pilots are clunky blah blah blah" but no. Even if it is a pilot there must be something in the show that grabs me right away. A character, a scene, a promise of things to come, etc. Dollhouse gave me nothing. And I'm already dreading the procedure feel that most episodes will have. Especially if they're as badly written as the first one was. Oh yeah, let me pay a bazillion dollars to hire a fake negotiator and not a real one. Oy. Also: NOT A SINGLE JOKE, JOSS?

YES, exactly. This is one of my very favorite kinds of romantic angst: we love each other yes let's admit it [and make out!] but we can't be together because evil scientists who invent DNA-based retroviruses/the United States Air Force/DESTINY say we can't be together so we'll just make goo-goo eyes at each other and be pretty while at it. :)

Dollhouse gave me nothing. And I'm already dreading the procedure feel that most episodes will have.

You know, I was waiting for something very procedural-feeling. And a while ago I read an interview with Joss in which he said he had an idea for a procedural "of all things" -- he wasn't talking about Dollhouse, but I was intrigued by the idea. But what we got was STUPID procedural and that bugs me A LOT. The whole negotiator-doll thing made absolutely no sense.

And the lack of jokes was SAD.

I had a similar reaction to you... My post is a one or two back at my journal. Except I actually don't see it as all that dark. I mean, yeah, it's WRONG what they are doing, but... maybe I'm watching too many Showtime shows... or TNT shows, even. I was more creeped out at the beginning of last week's The Closer when they found the girl's panties on the floor next to her body than I was at any point of Dollhouse. Heck, Leverage's episode about war orphans was more creepy. The tech guy is kinda ick, but... *shrugs ( ... )

Geek dude freaked me out A LOT. *shudders* And the whole premise is one big heap murky gray area, especially considering the teaser -- Echo was basically a high end hooker there? And I'm sure Caroline [that was her real name, right?] signed a contract saying whatever is done to her body while she's an Active is legal and whatnot, I still call skeevy.

And you're right, Helo should've had at least one scene with Echo.

Yeah, I know she's a prostitute on some jobs, but... I watch Secret Diary of a Call Girl you know? Gotta be a little more edgy than that to spook me.
