giving for chances to leave the basement life and not the landlord's wife

You know, I loathe Globo with all my might, but Globo Esporte has put up the most awesometastic Olympic Games calendar EVER, detailing all events in our local time -- and highlighting the ones wherein Brazilian athletes/teams are involved. FTW ( Read more... )

I was looking for an Olympic calendar last week and failed. I'll have to try again now since it's closer and hopefully find one for my time zone and channels. really, I just want to watch the women's judo matches.

Wikipedia is listing everything in China Standard Time, so you'll have to convert it to yours, but they have it here [just click the category links on the right side table]

I think one reason for that is that US networks actually delay sports events so that they can air them in prime time. Which just boggles my mind, because I come from the culture of "you watch it when it's on, even if that means you take the week of the Olympics off and stay up all night/sleep all day".

Of course, I grew up in a country where anytime there was a slalom race with Ingmar Stenmark or a tennis match with Björn Borg we would have a TV wheeled into the classroom so that we could watch.

That said, I couldn't care less about sports, so I don't care if you reveal it all, but I DO care if I have to scroll down six pages, so cutting for length is still very much appreciated.

Yes, here in Brazil it's the same thing. I'm sure you know our biggest sport is football -- during the World Cups everything STOPS when the Brazilian team is playing. And open TV channels show sports live even when they're happening elsewhere. No such thing as delays or reruns [well, only on cable, but the majority of people don't have cable].

And sure I'll be cut-tagging for length, what I'm worried is whether or not I can have any reaction outside of the cut.

US networks are just freakish and weird. Seriously.

But mostly I'm agreeing vehemently on the cutting for length, please.

I will most certainly cut for length -- although I cannot fathom being long-winded about sports, even in the midst of the Olympics. It'll most likely go SQUEE! or WOE! re: the Brazilians. *g*

As others have said, in the US we don't get to see them until 7 in the evening, so all throughout the day we have to dodge the results of the events we care about. It's like being told the ending of a movie, I hate that. I want to watch and be surprised by the results, not know throughout the entire game who's gonna win. There's no suspense that way. No heart pumping, no, 'Oooo we're gonna win!' or 'Oh, no, we're gonna lose!'

I know everyone says the journey is the thing, but I like the destination too. /geekiness

Yeah, I don't get that. This is obviously a cultural difference thing, because for me, if a sport event has passed then I'll look up the results and that's the end of it. I don't really understand the concept of spoilers for real life stuff.

You can post whatever, whenever you want. I voted to lj-cut results because I'm on the West Coast and we're delayed which pisses me off. I'm going to Tivo and fast-forward through the commercials anyway, so screw them for making me wait. I don't care too much about knowing who's going to win, but I've yet to figure out my internet strategy. :)

I really don't understand why it is that NBC paid A CRAPLOAD of money for the airing rights but they'll only show selected events at selected times. That's really a shame.

Aren't there cable/paid channels airing the Games full time, like we have here? I know there'll be internet coverage, but it's definitely not the same as watching on a big TV and all. :)
