Hmmm. Mostly yes--there are real guys with these characters' names, and it's their real lives I and my fellow GK fandomers are basing fic on. I personally certainly have written copious amounts of One Bullet Away fanfic under the banner of GK fandom

I definitely feel like GK fic is more FPF than RPF, for pretty much the exact same reasons you do, but I recognize it is a fine line for some people.

But then, I'm strange about RPF in general. A lot of actor RPF makes me uncomfortable, for instance, but I have no problem mainlining hockey RPF like it's going out of style. Probably because I don't follow hockey at all and thus the characters are more like original characters to me than real people. *shrug*

Yeah, I actually still find hockey RPF somewhere between upsetting and just not my thing where it involves guys (ha, I first typed "characters") from teams I am actually a fan of in a sports-fan sense--happily no one writes much Red Wings fic, and even Ovechkin fic is reasonably easy to miss in all the Kane/Toews and Sid/Geno and whatnot. But if I kind of know who the guys are but they're not My Guys, then I'm totally fine reading it. IDEK, I've given up on trying to have any kind of systematic stance on anything when it comes to RPF.

Thanks! The 4th wall fascinates me - I completely agree with you that people should not read slash fic about themselves (or people they know, if that's going to bother them.) And I think my gut check agrees with you that it's RPF, because the litmus test of "if I knew Nate Fick IRL, could I read GK fanfic and just picture the actors and not the people I know"? results in a resounding "Nope!"

Anyway, the bit about "they would know what I got wrong" is an interesting point and resonates with me, too.
