Stargate Fic: First Principles

Weirdly, "The Broca Divide" was the first SG-1 episode to pass the Bechdel test, which is good, because then I don't have to think about it anymore.

And the next episode, "The First Commandment," turns around and fails in epic fashion: only one woman speaks in the entire episode. Which is not to say she's the only woman appearing in the episode, ( Read more... )

Depending on how long she was stuck here, she was going to teach Batul math, or teach her that the people in charge were crazy, maybe both.

Oh YES. :)

I love this series of yours!

And, like Broca, you get to skip Hathor. Bonus!

She sat on the rug and worked on convincing herself that she wanted to hit someone--possibly herself, for walking into this--more than she wanted to cry. ... She just had to keep calm, and focus on being angry if she couldn't be calm.

Oh, haven't I been in that situation before... not the specifics, but pushing yourself toward anger instead of tears (or instead of angry tears)! Oh, Sam!

Sam laughed. Depending on how long she was stuck here, she was going to teach Batul math, or teach her that the people in charge were crazy, maybe both. Any way it worked they'd both come out ahead.

EXCELLENT.

I love how you're keeping up with this series!

Thank you! I suspect I won't manage to write all hundred-odd fixits the series will probably wind up calling for, but so far I'm having a lot of fun with this. :)

Oh, how wonderful! Now I want to see Batul leading the rebellion against Jonas.

Thank you! I'd have to watch it again to see who was leading the crowd that dumped him into the Gate, but I'm sure she was toward the front. ;)

These continue to be interesting, amusing, all with a different focus according to the story and because Sam is the main woman character, adding depth to Sam's character.

And proof, all they needed was shaving off 2-3 minutes ( the establishing shots outside the mountain maybe?) and add a scene or three like these.

Looking forward to more.

Thank you! I have a couple coming up without Sam, just for a change of pace, but she definitely tends to be half of the equation a lot of the time. :)

And I do think, sometimes, about how these scenes, or scenes like them, could have been fitted into the show--I suspect they would tend to warp the fabric of the episode around them, but I feel like that wouldn't actually be a bad thing...

The screencap annoyed me enough that I really wanted to read your fic, even though I've only seen a few episodes of SG-1, and rarely bother to read anything which isn't m/m slash ( ... )

Thank you!

The setup of the episode is essentially what you describe--Jonas has come from Earth and set himself up as this planet's God and is presumably exploiting the natives in every sense imaginable; and Sam, his ex-fiancee, is part of the team taking him down.

So I wrote Sam in very deliberate opposition to that whole archetype, and I'm pleased that you found it both surprising and enjoyable. Writing these stories has really gotten me better acquainted with Sam--I'm a m/m slasher myself, and before I started this project I'm honestly not sure I'd written more than a couple of stories that more or less accidentally passed the Bechdel test. So it's been a good experience for me, and I'm gratified that other people are getting something from it as well. :)
