When you said Ray K feeling left out, I immediately thought of this story:

Hook, Line and Sinker by Kellie Matthews, fifth in the Fishing series. The rest of the series is here on author's homepage. Though beware, the series isn't exactly nice to Vecchio.

Benny! by Maxine Mayer on the other hand, has both Rays feeling a bit left out, if on different levels.

For longfic, I'll have to direct you here: due-south. The fics I linked there range from <500 up to <114,000, so you have plenty to choose from.

As for H/C stories, let me get back to you on that. I know quite a few heartbreaking stories with eventual happy endings I could rec, but let me sort out which ones first. I'm assuming the H/C doesn't necessarily have to be a physical hurt?

No, it doesn't have to be physical hurt at all. And thanks so much for all the effort. I am going to start reading now :)

So here's a mishmash of physical and emotional H/C:

Ghosti by Hth: I found this particularly intense, and the last sentence of the quote here had quite an impact on me: "Is that how you like it, huh, Fraser? A little tiny bit of feeling something real every few years, like getting a tetanus shot, and then you're vaccinated against the human race for a little while longer? Easy come, easy go -- it was nice knowing you, but not too nice, God forbid. Hey, if I can figure out a way not to leave any fingerprints behind when I go, can I be the goddamn love of your life, too?"

Stories by M. Fae Glasgow: Three pdf stories of hers linked here, with both screen and print versions. I found them beautifully heartbreaking in that they put your heart back together again before the end.

Want by dessert_first: This too is hurts very much while reading, but has a stellar happy ending.

Katabasis by Aria: Part 1/2, Part 2/2: "I talked to your dad, I went through this place called the Borderland, I had a boat ride, I fed a wolf a doughnut, and I ( ... )

Am much amused that you have included j_s_cavalcante's 'Straightness' as bittersweet, because I've had it open on my computer for months to write up about, but under the category 'smoking hot' :) :) Also, how wonderfully she takes what could be language cliches and makes every single one rich and fresh and totally in Ray's voice. Somehow I had missed it reading her stories previously, and was bowled over when I found it.

Yes, Cavalcante certainly knows how to write fiction that resonates within the reader.

If it had been written by most anyone else, I wouldn't have read a story that says Ray experienced a gay-bashing and is now paranoid because of it. That's the sort of thing that, in certain fandoms and by certain authors, would have produced a cute!vulnerable!tearful-all-the-damn-time!expecting-protection-and-reassurance-all-the-damn-time!femboy!Ray story.

And the story is hot, maybe, but honestly, that was so much in the background for me amidst all the hurting Ray was doing it's not even funny. It was very much palpable for me just how much. And that basically nothing is more important to him than making sure he never loses Fraser? That's a punch in the gut right there.
