Worth the Wait

Since he was six years old Ray has had a list of things he looks forward to, things that are worth the wait.

Things like waiting for the school day to end so he could go to the local store and buy a gum ball for a nickel. Waiting until he was out in the street before putting it in his mouth, taking his time over it, knowing his mother would scold him for ruining his dinner. Saving the rest for later.

Smelling the beans for the pasta fagioli cooking and knowing he'd be tasting it later. His mother's cooking always living up to the anticipation.

Waiting nearly half a season before making his first basket after making the team. The pride and respect he got for it. The cheers had been a long time coming.

His first kiss with Irene. Awkward and brief but somehow perfect.

Finally getting hold of the latest Riviera brochure. Going up to his room and looking over it. Turning each page and memorising every word.

Queuing in the rain to get tickets for Saturday Night Fever. Finally getting to see Travolta on the big screen again. Waiting for a quiet moment to listen to the Bee Gees album.

Making it to graduation. Being able to stand up there with other cadets. His mother in tears, his father absent.

The few moments it took for Angie to say yes.

Buying his first Riv. Finally getting his hands on the keys after spending years scrimping and saving and making do with Angie's old Mustang.

Making Detective and realising perhaps he was good at being a cop.

Lately, though, there's been other things he's added to the list. Things that he waits for but are so gratifying when they happen. Things that sometimes he doesn't even know he's waiting for them to happen.

Like the first compliment Fraser paid him. Ray hadn't been waiting for one but he got one.

Waiting for Fraser to get off duty so he can give him a ride home or to interview a suspect. Never does time seem so slow than when he's standing outside the consulate waiting for his friend the Mountie statue.

The happiness in Fraser's voice when he gave him a wolf licence for Dief. That felt good. Ray had been waiting all day to reveal he'd made him one.

The thanks he gets when Fraser asks him to do something for him. Anything from giving him a lift to work to checking up on Dief.

Right now he's waiting for something else. He's been waiting a long time for this. Fraser starts smiling and then there it is, laughter. Ray screwed up the punchline of this American joke but Fraser is laughing and not just to humour him, a real, proper laugh.

Ray gets that weird feeling in his stomach, that one where his insides turn to mush because hearing Fraser laugh feels so good. He's been trying to make him laugh for weeks and he's done it.

Then Fraser stops laughing and is still smiling at Ray.

Ray tries to ignore the fact his heart is beating so fast because he's been waiting for something else but he never thought it would happen. But Fraser is leaning in toward him now and he mirrors the action. Ray is grateful he parked the Riv in a secluded spot.

He is still hoping, he can feel his palms sweating slightly in anticipation of this.

“I've been waiting for this,” Ray whispers.

“So have I,” Fraser replies.

Their lips meet and Fraser's hand is on his neck, caressing. It's like the first kiss with Irene only less awkward. Okay, so his knee is jammed under the dash and the steering wheel isn't helping but this is great. He's sad when it's over.

Ray adds it to the list. Waiting to kiss Fraser was well worth it. Of course, it felt so good he'll have to try it again, only this time, he won't wait so long.
