When I first watched this as it aired, I was not happy with the Defiant, but I grew to like it over the next seasons.

My heart breaks for Odo here when he first tries to "be a rock" etc... and then when he realizes his people are the big bads. I remember seeing this coming and even though it's well done, I still want to just warn him.

And Garak is just awesome personified. Do we need more?

I also was not fond of the Defiant when it first appeared--too much a copy of what other Treks had done, and too soon after TNG went off the air--but this rewatch made me realize why they made the choice. In the Maquis & Jem'Hadar episodes especially the three little runabouts seem a bit inadequate to the task. I'm really glad they didn't have it there from the start, though, because it would have made DS9 too similar to the other Treks ( ... )

I liked the VR - it seems like a good way to get to know people for whom you have little to no frame of reference, and for once VR didn't end with Everyone Dies! I think Garak was the prod for a more warlike, active stance (opposing the Admiral who was for following orders) to give Sisko and company a wide range of choices.

The biggest change for me, since the pilot, is that Sisko starting off trying not to the voice of law and order brought down from on high - but I didn't realise how much he'd gone down the road of his friend who is with the Marquis until this episode.
