More fantasy goodness...about fantasy wrongness. See, there's this guy ~3.875 years my junior named
Christopher Paolini who's writing a
fantasy trilogy. I'll assume my readership has never known of Eragon before so as to give myself an excuse to infodump. Eragon is a checklist of fantasy cliches and a New York Times bestseller. Paolini is homeschooled and comes from a well-off family. Now a good background shouldn't have anything to do with bad writing, but I read that
people think they go together. (I don't like unsourced claims either, especially when they're mine. I promise to cite a reference as soon as I find one.)
Let's go away from the person and criticize the series on it's own merits, which are few. However,
kippurbird has already throughly criticized
Eragon and is ongoing with
Eldest, so you may as well read them in her journal or
her archives. Come to think of it, the rest of her journal looks comment-worthy too.
