Melou is fussing around with no particular destination--possibly winding down to the cottage, although he hasn't gone there since his father got back--and stops stock still when he catches sight of her. This is how he survived as long as he did: he can stand so still it's hard to see him in the woods.

He watches with great interest as she gets nearer him.

She's wearing her shirt and trousers (although no socks, anywhere on her person), as being more practical, and her hands are a telltale greyish brown. When she catches sight of him, from about three feet away, she leaps into the trees.

Melou starts. "Sorry! --pardon. Your pardon!" She moves so quick, and the trousers are so unprecedented to him, that he doesn't immediately identify gender.
