We had Thing 1 home for a couple days and though he doesn't like most movies he was eager to see Star Trek with us. So we got tickets for the three of us. But when we got to the theater they regretfully informed us that their projector was on the fritz. They refunded our card for the Trek tickets and offered us comps as well. I went into this one with high expectations. It looked like fun, and funny, with a great cast. In the end, I found it to be a tedious mash-up of stereotypes that wandered pointlessly and failed to amuse. It wasn't so bad as to make me want my hours back, but it was very "meh" and "that was too long for its content."

There are moments where I listen to music and think "gods, I'm such a stereotypical old fogey but I really liked these guys back when they did X". I understand that musicians change their desires and their styles, but sometimes it's just true that what attracted me to an act fades from its repertoire and I'm left with something that I don't much ( Read more... )

Which is to say it was neither as bad as I had feared, nor as good as it could have been. Mostly it seemed to be Kasdan and Abrams saying "Oh, there was this thing that people really loved in the original so we should totally re-create that." I will say first off that these people know how to make a (new) Bond film. This one has enough story continuity to make things interesting and just the right amount of the things you want in a Bond film - guns, women, fast cars, the right drinks, gadgets, humor.
