Music from friends

I still haven't dealt with the tags thing over on Dreamwidth so music posts will still originate here for a while longer. I have a bunch of open tabs but politics and life stresses have eaten a lot of hours when I'd normally be listening and filtering material. Fortunately I have some help this time around.

The first two items come from sovay and they' ( Read more... )

I wish I could claim origination but it's a Firefly reference: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=I%27ll%20be%20in%20my%20bunk

Sxip Shirey is an unusual enough name to ring a bell but I had to go searching online to find where I'd seen the name before. Back in 2009 he did the score for an otherwise-silent short film called Statuesque written by Neil Gaiman and featuring as one of its human-mannequin performers Amanda Palmer.

I saw that-in part because of Bill Nighy-but I'm not sure I made the connection with Shirey at the time! I am fairly certain I saw him emcee either a Dresden Dolls or an Amanda Palmer concert. I also believe I heard the Luminescent Orchestrii live, because I associate being in an audience with hearing their song "Knockin'" for the first time. It reads to me now as a direct ancestor of "Cinnamon Stick": lyrically simple and smoldering, although "Cinnamon Stick" is even more stripped-down and on fire. [edit] Shireyhe Carolina Chocolate Drops also recorded "Knockin'," which means Rhiannon Giddens on lead vocals. Nice.

Hmm, that Knockin' URL is bonking for me. Might be work firewall things; I'll try again later. Like the other one, as you'd expect.

Rhiannon... oh my... yes. ::fans self:: That was hot. Normally I'm not drawn into watching the videos, I just listen and multi-task. Not. This. Time ( ... )

Happy Valentine's Day to you too -- this was interesting enough that I listened to all of these, or at least gave them a try. I did what you suggested on Cinnamon Stick; listened, then played the video (showing it to the boyfriend at the same time) and oooh, hot. And that reaction comes AFTER a day at the Fetish Fair Fleamarket, so it must be so! In summary, thanks. :)
