We saw "Suicide Squad" and I still don't like movies about villains

This movie was the hardest to review of the set I've seen recently. I really wanted to like it, and there were a couple of really good performances. But the script is an utter mess - incoherent, spineless, and nearly pointless in places. If Warner/DC can't get it together soon they should just pick up their marbles and go home. 2/5 stars because ( Read more... )

I'll give the comic a try. My understanding is that the extra footage came because the trailer was so well-received and basically it contained all the good bits of the movie, which BOMBED with test audiences. It was another OMGDARK thing and people hated that so they went back and shot new material to make this hash. My bet is that reviving what was cut wouldn't help, much.

"One thing you do NOT do is try to make villains look good because the so-called good guys are actually really awful shits."

I haven't seen this movie, and after reading your review am inclined to skip it, but I do enjoy movies and cable television original series in which the villain and the "good guy" pursuing the villain are both complicated and not completely good or evil. I'm thinking of the Showtime series "Billions" in which the billionaire fund manager Bobby Axelrod (played by Damian Lewis) suspected of insider trading is charismatic, loyal to his employees, and a good father and husband, and the U.S. Attorney pursuing him Chuck Rhoades (played by Paul Giamatti) is an obsessive who is sure Axelrod is guilty despite an absence of evidence. Axelrod is a rags to riches golden boy, while Rhoades is a child of privilege with a dark side. Have you seen it?
