Glad you liked. I both love and hate drabbles because they are so short. You have to know what you want to say and just say it without extraneous babble. But at the same time, you don't have to worry about writing an epic.
I like reading drabbles, if I don't read more than two or three at a time. Then they become annoying.
I like writing them because you can express an idea even if you don't have much time to write - which is the case only too often. On the other hand, it's intriniscally unsatisfying: too short, always, to really get to the meat of the matter. You can only hint at the depths. By the same token, you don't have to worry about falling short in the expression of something deep, but that's cheating - I don't want to use that as an excuse to avoid writing the hard stuff.
So you see, it adds up to mixed feelings. :)
But a really good drabble is worth its weight in gold.
See, drabbles are a really good idea for me to write because I am fundamentally incapable of finishing anything that is longer than 5-10 pages. I have so many epic stories sitting on my harddrive that are about 10-15 pages done and I'll probably never finish due to the disappearance of the muse. By writing drabbles or little ficlets, I can guarentee a finish to the story. And as unfinished wips are a huge pet peeve of mine, I don't like to inflict them on the world.
I do agree that after a couple, reading drabbles does make one long for an epic. Like I said, love and hate them.
And here's hoping the writers do more with Tosh next season.
I love Tosh, I really do. She's just such an interesting character that they didn't fully explore IMHO. And really, on the occasional dull day at Torchwood what else is there to do but wind up the boys and watch them argue?
Due to your Tosh as a fangirl comment, I now have visuals of Tosh reading fic and Jack writing it and them having this great online friendship and deciding to actually meet when they find out they are both in Cardiff and going to the meeting and realizing and racing back to Torchwood for the retcon. Or to collaborate. I'm not sure. Also, I apologize for the runon sentence. It's past my bed time and punctuation is the first thing to go.
I love Tosh too. She's a darling! keep promising a friend of mine to actually get round to writing Jack/Tosh/Ianto and I still haven't got round to it. Oh dear! She's not well so maybe I'll make the effort.
You should definitely write it. Not just for your friend but for everyone. There's not enough Jack/Tosh/Ianto out there. Actually there's not enough Tosh fic in general. Either that or I'm looking in the wrong places.
Great stuff! And I love how Owen misses the good gossip by walking off when he does. You did a great job with all the characters in so sort a time!
Love Tosh, and I love her subversive role in the second drabble. Go, Tosh! I hope she gets some moments to shine (and not just be the shy geek) in the next season. I wish Wardrobe would give her sexy lirarian outfits like they put her in in the publicity shots for Torchwood (see crowson75's icon above). Mrow. The "refugee from the 80's/90's" look doesn't do her justice.
I don't see it as Owen missing the good gossip by walking away so much as Tosh not wanting him to hear the good gossip because it would only make him even more convinced that Jack is gay rather than willing to shag anything that's gorgeous.
She's a little trouble maker. ;) And I agree about next season. She really does deserve moments of her own. Don't get me wrong the Mary ep and Captain Jack Harkness were both great Tosh eps (really liked seeing Jack bond with someone besides Gwen), but there is so much more to do with Tosh. And yes, a better wardrobe would be a huge help.
