hardly a pirate.

I haven't really discussed it on here, but five months ago I was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes, which is very unusual for someone my age, unless you happen to have been taking high dose steroids for a few years, a category I am fortunate enough to fall under. But not only do steroids cause cataracts, they cause what is clinically referred ( Read more... )

I am officially not a pansy.

I always knew you weren't.

(When I was writing this entry, I actually got stuck trying to write the lj-cut text. "Pansy" never felt right, everything else I came up with was too crude or sounded stupid, and eventually I just said fuck it.)

Were laser eyes an option?

You know, like Cyclops?

I really tried, but there are just no mad scientists in my area specializing in ophthalmology.

Also considered were glowing eyes, a targeting reticle, bright pink pupils, and targeted zoom technology.

I've often dreamed about having a little camera in my eye.

I have a cataract in my left eye! My optometrist doesn't sound too bothered by it though... :/

Most cataracts take a very, very long time to "ripen" (their word, not mine...) and seriously affect vision, so you should be alright for a long time to come.

What's more, I bet the technology used in interocular lenses sees a vast improvement over the next ten or so years, based on my own research. If you end up needing a lens replacement, I bet you'll get a totally sweet new eye.

Wow, they show surgeries in the pre-operative room? Don't they ever have people run away screaming after that?

Yeah, doesn't that seem a little strange? Maybe stupid? I mean, really, why would you do that? It certainly isn't comforting. Watching the surgery performed (on a huge screen, zoomed clear up to the eye) was way, way more traumatic than actually being under the knife.

actual pre-op excerpt:
>"Your heart rate's a little bit high. Are you a little anxious today?"

I wasn't sure if I should read the excerpt (being an actual "pansy" and all) since i am at work, but as usual it was entertaining and not all that gross. I still can't believe they put the live feed in the operating room. That is crazy! Got pictures of the eyepatch?

I can't believe it either. What a terrible idea. The only reason I can possibly think of that it might have been there is so that the other staff could know immediately if there were some kind of problem, and what it was.

Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of the eyepatch. But I do wear a standard black pirate-style eyepatch for about an hour per day to do strengthening exercises.
