Individual Cliché: The American exchange student, her perpetually upbeat personality and sunny smiles spreads an infectious Hawaiian warmth to those around her.

Ten True Facts and a secret:
~☆1: At the age of seven, Bekah discovered a love for the drums. Her parents tell her that came about after watching Drumline when it came out, and although she's only seen the movie once and remembers very little of it, it makes sense. She started taking private drum lessons, then joined her school band in 7th grade. She's best with the snare drum, but she has a love for the bass drum as well, and thinks it would be fun to one day learn to play the timpani.

~☆2: Bekah's family moved to Hawaii from Korea when she was two years old, when her mother was pregnant with Bekah's younger sister, Grace. The move was purely for business, but they wound up staying longer than expected and eventually took up a permanent residence there. To Bekah, that was perfectly fine. The beach was her calling, and she spent much of her time in the water or tanning on the sand.

~☆3: From a young age, Bekah has loved to surf, and Hawaii has the best waves. In her own words, the sand, sun, and ocean are the keepers of her soul, and if she's not behind her drum set, she's in the water with a board under her, searching for that perfect wave to come along. She learned with her dad, and eventually taught her sister, but neither of them enjoyed it as much as she did, and it eventually became an activity she shared more with friends than family.

~☆4: Until she moved back to Korea, that is. Once her parents realized that she would get to school late and leave early, and that she would ditch doing homework, all for the sake of the waves, they knew they had to put their foot down. So, during the American summer break, they un-enrolled her from the local high school and sent her to Korea. On occasion, when business permits, her parents and sister visit Korea to make sure their daughter is focusing more on her studies. It helps that, in Bekah's opinion, Korea's waves aren't as great as Hawaii's.

~☆5: Despite being shipped back to Korea, Bekah doesn't harbor ill will towards her family. She may be a bit bitter at Korea for it's lame waves (and, okay, perhaps a bit at her parents), but she's a family girl and loves them a great deal. She enjoys living on her own in the house her family bought conveniently just down the street from the school, but she is known to get homesick every so often. During those days, she longs for a beach, any beach.

~☆6: Despite being a drummer, Bekah harbors a secret desire to learn to play the guitar. Rock music is probably her favorite style of music, and while she loves a good beat, a killer guitar solo leaves her weak in the knees.

~☆7: Since she was told she would be living mostly on her own, Bekah has started to learn to cook. Kalua pork is one of her favorite dishes to make, and it has become something of a fallback when she can't think of anything else to make. She is also something of a carnivore and enjoys making meat dishes in general.

~☆8: Although she was brought up with a Korean family, and although Hawaii has a large Korean population, Bekah has troubles with the language sometimes. She's trying to overcome this by studying more often, but it certainly isn't unheard of for her to get stuck on a word or phrase. When this happens, she gets openly embarrassed and internally frustrated at herself.

~☆9: Is the keeper of the keys and grounds and Hogwarts. Okay, not really. But she is, in fact, a nerd. Harry Potter, Star Wars, Futurama, video games, comic books, movies - she has her nerd side, and she indulges in it more often than not.

~☆10: On the outside, Bekah laughs in the face of romance, finds it cheesy and silly, and most of the time won't take it seriously. But secretly, on the inside, she is a sucker for it and will swoon if it's (sincerely) directed at her.

~☆Secret: Bekah has an odd sense of self esteem. On the one hand, she thinks she looks pretty darn cute when she looks in the mirror, whether it's in her drumline uniform, jeans and a t-shirt, or a bikini. On the other hand, though, she's half convinced that the rest of the world is comparing her to the stick-thin girls at the school and don't find her attractive. Most of the time she doesn't care what other people think, but she has her moments of insecurity. These moments are usually spent in a place where no one will see her, like the shower.

Writing sample: Stepping off the plane and onto Korean soil almost made Bekah want to cry. It was warm here, pleasant, but not like it was in Hawaii: the humidity didn't weigh down on her, she couldn't smell the ocean in the hot air, and this was probably just her being too disappointed, but even the ground felt different under her sandals. After spending the majority of her life in Hawaii, returning to the place of her birth made her feel like an alien, a foreigner.

'Well,' she thought to herself as her eyes moved from sign to sign, her sluggish Korean struggling to keep up with everything that was going on, 'I am a foreigner, technically.' The thought didn't do much to ease her mind, but she had long since come to terms with the fact that there wasn't really much she could do about her situation other than make the best of it. It wasn't ideal, but she could either rage about it and still have to be here, or accept it and enjoy it. She preferred the latter.

So, hefting her duffel across one shoulder, a backpack across the other, and wheeling two suitcases on a cart behind her, she set off to find her ride and start getting settled into her new place. There was a month and a half before the second semester started here in Korea, and Bekah was determined to at least be somewhat comfortable.
