The kids are in bed - not anywhere near asleep. So there will be a goodly number of trips up the stairs yet. The ped is reading just under 16,000 steps or just under 8 miles

I know nothing about pedometers and recommended steps. However I learned last year that there is a high intensity alternative to running. (I can run, I just HATE it) Incline training. Basically walking at moderate speed, 3.5-4.5 mph, at increased incline or slope. I love it and it gets my heart rate up into the 80 - 90% range for 45-60 minutes pretty readily. Most treadmills will go up to 15%. There are specific machines out now that will do up to 40%. I don't know how the incline will affect your knees but it might be looking into.
I had been finding that even walking on the treadmill at low speeds was still too much impact and caused pain after about 5 minutes. I'll have to try again and see if its any better. The eliptical works well for me but requires 1) a trip to the gym 2) doesn't add "variety" Have you tried walking backwards on the 15% incline? It makes you think about foot placement. It really showed me how much proprioceptive nerve damage there was post knee surgery and helped correct it.

Right now, my exercise routine is cardio on the stationary bike, which I use instead of the treadmill to avoid mashing up my knees.
Honestly, I am amazed at all the stuff you manage to do along with managing your two boys.... I am impressed.
