She could have gone home for Christmas, but Mel would have been spending it with her family in South Carolina, and well -- to put it mildly they'd never liked Janice's company very much. So she had stayed here, and had spent the past couple of days hauling trunkloads of artifacts off to her contact on the mainland, netting a nice price for them

Billy was out for a run, the exercise keeping him warm despite the chill. He spotted Dr. Covington and decided to risk the possible damage to his sanity by talking to her.

"Morning!" he called.

"Absolutely. Watch out for snakes on your dig."

"Thanks, but I'm not the one who has problems with snakes. That's the Jones guy," Janice told him. "Wonder what he's up to these days?"

"Could always look him up, if he's a contemporary of yours, I'm sure he's referenced somewhere."

Janice laughed. "Oh, I know him. Haven't seen him since a few years ago, when they threw us both out of an anthropology department party at the University of North Carolina, though."

Billy didn't know who this Jones guy was but his mun was totally making a Janice/Indy OTP flag, but he could totally see that happening to Dr. Covington. "Let me guess, contradicted one of the professor's theories?"

"Actually, he hit on Mel." Janice smiled a little savagely at that. "But he probably would've, if I let him keep talking."

Totally not canon, but they know each other in fic all the time. I mean, how could you resist?

"Melinda Pappas, my research partner," Janice explained. "Sweet girl, brilliant with classical languages, but zero backbone and not enough common sense to be let out on her own." Her tone was affectionate despite the words.

"He was trying to charm her, and there was no way in hell I was losing my linguistics expert to that crazy bastard."
