This is very cool, but I think my favorite part was actually that moment where he thought about fire in the rain. That strange disconnect.

Also, poor Tavaly. She's never going to get a boyfirend that doesn't have nightmares, is she.

Having had a close friend who was a combat medic who had nightmares, I can truly say this was well-written and damned close to the point. It gave me chills, to be honest. I figured it for a dream right off, but man ... that was pretty powerful writing.

And using Neiran as the protagonist was amazing. Even dying, Neiran was Neiran.

So very well done here.
