I'm overwhelmed by everybody's helpful advice. I'm sure you'll all be glad to hear that I gave up hitting it with a stick when I got bored (which was unfortunately not before I managed to cover my hands with cuts and bruises), and just left it to it. 18 fucking hours it took

Now i'm off to dip my sore sore fingers in a nice soothing cup of tea.
