As a child, solutions seem very simple. Always taller and (shall I say) curvier than my peers, there was probably no nine year old girl that looked less like a ballerina than me. But that, of course, was my ambition: to dance, to glide like the most delicate butterfly ( Read more... )

I appreciated reading about the way you are with your own kids, especially given the juxtaposition with the way your parents were with you. I'm thankful to have parents that treated me the way you treat your kids - maybe they didn't always approve of my decisions or think I was doing the right thing, but they always made sure I knew that I was loved, and that makes a big difference in someone's life.

It's a shame that you spent so much time searching for something that you aren't sure you'll ever see; I can't imagine that it's easy to go through life like that (the only person I was ever really worried about disappointing was myself, but I am a pretty tough self-critic). At the same time, though, I wonder how differently you might have raised your own children if you didn't know what it was like to go without.

I like to think there was good from it all, that it made me a more caring parent. I don't know. My kids are 20, 18 and 15 so its still rough sometimes. I love them so much, but our communication still gets snarled.

I am glad to hear your parents made a difference in your life. Gives me hope!!

I can relate to chasing after parental approval and not achieving it no matter how one tries. Live well and live happy. And embrace the rainbow!

You are too. I admire you for staying in education. I am not teaching this year (by choice.). Thanks for all you do for kids!!

It's a wonderful thing that you are breaking a cycle of sorts. I'm sorry you've had to live your life chasing your parents' approval. That's something I can unfortunately relate to. I'm glad the clouds can't extinguish the colors and love in your life. :-)
