Huh, I never thought about it like that. From the two versions I know - the film and the radio play (both with primarily the original cast) I assumed that he was being up-front about it.

I always assumed he was telling the truth (in which "I said" would probably be more accurately phrased as "I replied") but I suppose it could be read either way.

Also watched the Sheffield Crucible (excellent) production and had the same thought. No one raised this this at the Talkback session on Thursday but I will raise it at a forthcoming "coffee morning" with the cast and production staff and "report back" - I agree with alexi_lupin and think it is meant to be ambiguous.
