Yeah that was one of the first things I noticed! And then he just died it red at the end! He really did do it on a cheap budget! I also think that Captain Hammer's cargo pants were stolen from Jayne's wardrobe, but that's just a guess.
Actually.. if you look at the red costume.. the threads in the seams are still white... so if it was just dyed, wouldn't the seam threads have gone red too?
LOL, that'd be awesome. I can't find anything like it. Closest I can find is "Howie" style(second picture on that page, sorry it's so small) but even that's not right.
Wonder if there's some way to contact Shawna. Hmmmm...
Look really closely at the texture of the fabric when Dr H is talking to Moist in Act II. There is a kind of vertical pattern in the fabric - not a "stripe" really, but something in the weave. Which makes it unlikely to be heavyweight cotton twill, as I first thought (and will probably end up having to use anyway).
I saw the vertical lines, too. It could still be a twill.
There's no way to contact the original costume designer and ask her? I saw that her site was down, but if she was serious about wanting a lot of people in costume, she'd help us out.
What we really need to know is: What type of fabric? What weight fabric? What color fabric? Which size/style/company/item number are the buttons? Did she design the Caduceus? If not, where did she get it from? If so, can we have a full-size, high-quality PNG of it so we can work out the embroidery ourselves?
With that, we can work out the pattern ourselves. It would have to be different to fit each of us right, anyway. But with the above information, the costumes could kick ass and make other fandom look sad. ;)
I've had no luck yet on figuring out if the costume designer used a stock Caduceus from a machine embroidery package or if she designed and digitized her own for the pocket.
The pattern doesn't look too difficult, except that the front flap is likely lined with the same sort of fabric so it can hang open. The length of the "skirt", the length of the slits, and the positioning of the back gathering band would all depend on the height of the wearer.
I saw some buttons in JoAnne's that looks pretty white and simple, with two holes. They might have to be off-white buttons.
Anyone who actually knows about sewing and fabrics want to help us all out?
I've spent some time looking at Caduceuses in embroidery packages on the Web, and it makes me think the the costume designer did come up with her own for the Firefly/Dr. Horrible coat.
The snakes come out away from the winged staff far more than is customary, and the colors are also unusual.
We're going to need an artist who can touch up the best screencap we have, in actual size, so we can digitize it with a home (or commercial, if anyone has access to one) embroidery/sewing machine.

Doesn't the material look faintly stripy? I assumed it would be a cotton twill fabric, but now I'm not sure, maybe it's ribbed or something?
