Well i'm back from ireland and the summer has officially started, which could mean only one thing...my annual request for summer reading recommendations. Last year Ugly Americans and especially Crime and Punishment were big winners. Well then recommend something.

I actually like keeping copies of books around, just kind of an obsession of mine I guess...but there's plenty of used bookstores around so price is actually less a constraint than time.

Depends on what you want:

Academic: Liquid Life: Abortion and Buddhism in Japan by William LaFleur - This is an interesting read even if you're not interested in how Japan handles "the abortion debate," but it's certainly not a page-turner, just really well-done.

Funny Novel: Space Station Seventh Grade by Jerry Spinelli - I adore this book. Don't be fooled by it possibly being in the kid's section. If you find it, read the first page or so and then decide if it's still funny (I thought it was). It's also really short and probably pretty cheap if you find it in paperback.

Serious Novel: Hearts in Atlantis by Stephen King - I don't know if you're into Stephen King, but this one is different from his usual horror stuff. It's 5 stories about kids in the 60s and they're all inter-related somehow. It sometimes drags and feels a bit forced, but overall I found it enjoyable for leisure reading. The only downside is that it's really long.

Oh yeah, Angels and Demons isn't bad. It reads at the same pace as Ugly Americans. Dan Brown is a ( ... )
