2) Some Canon Stuff

Actual Canon: So let's go back, way, way back a while year and some months ago. Riku is living, apparently happy enough, on Destiny Islands. He has lived there his entire life, always best friends with Sora. At some point Kairi arrived, but in spite of himself Riku regarded Kairi as a friend even if she was worming her way into his relationship with Sora. Perhaps this is because when Kairi arrived she brought with her a hope for new worlds, Kairi, afterall, had shown up mysteriously on Destiny Islands with no memory of her life before. I strongly suspect this is when Riku first got the idea that there were worlds beyond his own.

And knowing such a thing, the unchanging Destiny Islands probably began to wear on him. By the time he's fifteen, Riku is planning on an a way to escape their world. His intentions, he says, are to help Kairi find her homeworld, but one strongly suspects he merely wants to go exploring, like any young boy would.

What you need to understand is that Riku is right. Kingdom Hearts contains a magical universe where stars are not distant suns, but other planets, most of them full of Disney characters. These worlds are connected via doors and keyholes which can be unlocked or locked to protect from or allow visitors. And the person chosen to control their pathways is the Keyblade master who gets a, you guessed it, keyblade with which they can lock or unlock anything.

Riku is not the hero of the story though. The door on Destiny Islands becomes opened and creatures of darkness called Heartless invade. Heartless are actually, if you want to be technical, half-hearts. They are the darkness in people's hearts that is released when a person is killed by a heartless (or when their Heart is unlocked).

Riku is not really hero material at this point, because when the Darkness invades and covers his world and takes him and his friends away from their family and rips apart their home, all he can do is grin and invite the power into him.

While he never really becomes outright evil, through the course of Kingdom Hearts Riku becomes more cold, 'heartless', selfish and badly dressed. When we next see him he is a little high on his new power, and clearly happy to see Sora again, but disappears when he sees Sora with his new friends, Donald and Goofy. Riku himself is hanging out with Maleficient, who repeatedly hits on him poisons his mind against his friends. In the end, Riku seems to believe Sora cares about these new people more than him (and Kairi) and he goes off to save Kairi on his own, probably intending to show up Sora.

Though Riku never actually loses his heart in the game, and thus never becomes a heartless, he does become someone filled with darkness. He proves that he will hurt one person's friends to save his own, when he kidnaps Pinocchio with the intentions of basically killing him (this kinda foreshadows what later happens to Roxas) for the sake of finding a way to restore Kairi. And he also seems to gradually grow to hate Sora as the story progresses. I personally think he was just very, very hurt. It wasn't warranted, no, but his motives seem to spend for being spiteful about the fact that Sora had gone off his own to adventure happily, and wasn't exactly making haste to find him or Kairi.

Things progress. Riku gains the power of Darkness from Ansem, who chooses to inhabit his body. By the time Sora catches up to Riku in Hollow Bastion, Riku is very powerful and wearing a feathered tutu. At this point Riku proves that, for whatever reason, he is also a keyblade master. Ultimately, canon says only those with strong hearts can wield the keyblade. Originally the impression that the keyblade is given to one with a pure heart, thus Sora, but throughout later games it becomes obvious that Darkness is not 'Evil' in the strictest sense, it's just the opposite of Light and humans and the people of the Kingdom Hearts universe happen to mostly be denizens of Light and don't want to become dwellers of Darkness. Thus, despite how black Riku's heart might have been at the time, he was able to completely steal the Keyblade from Sora, whose heart was probably weakening over fighting his friend.

Eventually, of course, Sora gets the Keyblade back. And in Riku and Sora's final fight, Ansem fully takes over Riku's body and reveals himself.

More things happen that aren't relevant to Riku's story. But after this series of events, Sora is fighting Ansem once again, demanding he release Riku. In the end, Kingdom Hearts opens (or so we think) and the light that washes out of it destroys Ansem. However, since Ansem's body was Riku's body transformed, this also destroys Riku's body. Riku stands on the other side of Kingdom Hearts, which is apparently a realm where bodiless souls can survive, and Sora and Riku close the door together. The last thing Riku tells Sora is to look after Kairi.

Skip to the next game! Riku apparently got lost in the darkness of Kingdom Hearts and blacked out for a while. When he awakens it's to someone's voice (Christopher Lee!) leading him out. He finds himself in the basement of Castle Oblivion.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, is a very substantial game for Riku. Mainly this is because of three things. The first is that he is in control again and he knows what he did before was wrong and he regrets it, but he also has utter faith in Sora because of it. But he can still smell Ansem's darkness within him, and repeatedly throughout the game Riku stubbornly refuses Ansem's offers, requests, demands etc and ultimately fights and defeats him.

The second is that King Mickey arrives and speaks to Riku. Mickey helps Riku, who doesn't think he deserves helping, and keeps him moving down his chosen path even though Riku is uncertain of that path himself, Mickey has faith in him. This means a lot to Riku.

The third is Namine. Namine, pretending to be Kairi, is the one to finally tell Riku that his Darkness is not a weakness but a strength, and that just because he has Darkness doesn't mean he can't have Light too. This revelation is what changes Riku permanently, he finally accepts that even if he isn't the greatest person ever, it doesn't mean he deserves to burn in the Light. From that point on he uses his Darkness willingly, and Namine becomes another person who helped save him from himself.

By the end of KH:CoM, Riku decides to continue on his chosen path, Twilight, with King Mickey who wants to accompany him. Namine offers him the chance to sleep like Sora, so that they can wake up and be together again. But Riku decides that even if he can't get rid of his Darkness, he can get rid of Ansem's darkness, and he wants to continue on until he's done so.

Also, that voice that woke him in the darkness? Was DiZ. They don't do much at this point, but eventually Riku and Mickey split up, and DiZ goes to Riku, telling him of a way to save his precious friend, Sora.

You see, while Sora was asleep everyone forgot about him, this includes Riku. Surely Riku had a sense of him, someone so important that Riku would kill to bring him back. But he likely only knew his name because DiZ told him. I strongly suspect that DiZ used Riku in this. Namine, when she put Sora into that bubble, never said that it was something Sora wouldn't be able to wake up from. And there is no reason Sora should not have been able to, he functioned fine without Roxas before then and should have been able to continue that way.

However, DiZ has his own agenda. He needs the keyblade master to be at his full strength, and he cannot be if half of himself is missing. DiZ goes to some length to manipulate events. Riku captures Roxas, Sora's Nobody, and traps him inside a virtual world for the last six days that Sora remains asleep, his memories being replaced. And Riku, without his own memories of events involving Sora, probably didn't have any way to know that Roxas wasn't required to save Sora. This is really the only way I can rationalize the events that take place.

Anyway. The way it goes is Sora lost his heart briefly in Kingdom Hearts 1, and when those with a strong heart lose their heart to darkness, a Nobody is created. A nobody is the shell of the heart, with neither darkness nor light. Roxas is Sora's nobody.

Riku, under orders from DiZ but still with his own will, tracks down Roxas once and loses to him. The second time Riku nearly loses again, but taps into his greatest darkness, Ansem's, in a last effort to overcome Roxas. While Riku does succeed in defeating Roxas, he loses much of himself in the process. With his memories of Sora gone, Riku was probably a little spotty anyway, and then with Ansem's darkness flowing through him, he began, for a short time, to think he was Ansem. He also looked like him.

The identity crisis goes away gradually. The physical one doesn't and Riku spends most of the game hiding in a black cloak with the hood down to hide Ansem's features.

We don't know much of what Riku did during the course of Kingdom Hearts 2. We know he left clues for Sora to find out about Roxas, because while Riku doesn't regret what he did to Roxas, he doesn't want him to be forgotten either. We also know he makes some sort of deal with Axel, but not what. This doesn't stop Axel from kidnapping Kairi, of course. And might even be the cause of it, depending on how those negotiations went.

And of course, Namine, who it is very likely Riku spent the game watching over when he wasn't doing other things.

What we do know is that he and Namine work together to free Kairi from Castle Oblivion when she is kidnapped. Namine then returns to Kairi and Riku tries to leave, not wanting to be seen. However since Kairi tops him, he doesn't get to do that and is forced to reveal himself and rejoin Sora.

Riku isn't really 'himself' until he gets not only his body back (remember, he lost his physical body waaay back at the end of game one) but also gets back his own body. This happens in a fit of massive Deus Ex Machina when DiZ destroys himself while attempting to destroy Kingdom Hearts. The resulting explosion gives back Riku's body (because DiZ did say 'anything could happen') and Riku loses his ability to open pathways to darkness, which seems to be something only bodiless beings like Nobodies and Heartless can do.

After that, Riku is his usual self. Confident, snarky and strong. He can join your party and plays as Sora's bitch. Mash the Triangle button to make Riku magically appear by your side and use his abilities of Darkness to defend you.

Riku eventually tells Sora about Roxas, and reveals that he thinks Roxas wanted to meet him anyway. I think this is a lie of sorts on Riku's part. Roxas DID want to meet him, but he clearly didn't want to lose himself and rejoin him. Riku fails to mention this despite likely knowing it himself.

While Riku isn't really around for much of the game, you learn a lot from him in his short time. Riku never, for example, condemns Nobodies for being Nobodies, which Sora does on a number of occasions. Instead he treats them like he would treat anyone who was doing something bad; a villain because of their actions, not their birth. He never shows any mercy, just understanding.

At the end of the game, Riku confesses to Sora a lot of what we've known since game one. He was jealous of Sora, he thought himself better than Sora, but in the end he's happy to be himself just so he can be Sora's friend. Despite a brief and very interesting moment where Sora and Riku talk bitter sweetly about becoming the Darkness, since the Light is now safe, they do find a way home (Kairi) and return to it.

Riku's final observation is that Destiny Islands never changes, that it's a small world, but also a big world, and he seems to finally be genuinely content with his home.

What Audience/Otaku Characters Can Mention To Him: Again, pretty much anything. Riku deals with stuff as he has to, as he can handle his own past, he's decided that. Also he's experienced enough brain breaking stuff at camp that he's not likely to have a heart attack anymore over anything weird.

3) What skills or powers does your character have? In particular, list any skills or powers that could be used in a combat situation.

Riku wields a keyblade called 'Way to the Dawn'. As far as physical combat goes, he's very fast when he needs to be, can occasionally defy gravity, is a very competent sword fighter and can pretty much top anyone from Kingdom Hearts except for Roxas or Sora. But when you get right down to it, in sword combat, Riku is probably more skilled than Sora. However, Riku has no magic abilities. He does have an endless amount of potions and the Darkness. With Darkness he has two obvious attacks: The first is a ball of darkness which knocks people back, but doesn't do any damage. The second is a barrier which can stand up to nearly any attack, but only lasts for a few seconds before he has to stop and do it again. Neither of these are particularly tiring for him and he can do them indefinitely.

Riku also has a number of cool keyblade tricks, and can work together with Sora to do omega power attacks.

Also, Riku can 'smell' darkness, so he'll know bad people are bad right away.

4) Quick List of Friends and Foes.

Riku doesn’t currently have an out and out foes, just people he's aware of that could become foes. That means pretty much any Nobody in camp, including Roxas. Otherwise his friends are: Sora, Kairi, Namine and Saya. Axel and Roxas kinda walk in and out of that list on a daily basis, and Riku can never quite make up his mind about them. But if push came to shove, he would protect them if they needed it.

5) Other

Can I shapeshift/bodyswap/spit at/step on/etc?

For the most part, ask me. It's okay to hate Riku or love him or even attack him, but nothing permanent or that requires much work on my part without asking.

Maim/Murder/Death: Maim is okay if you get into a fight with him and check with me first. He can pretty much recover himself. Murder and death are probably both no's. Riku will kill someone if he has to, but it's hard to get in a situation where he would have to. He would probably be okay with killing any of the Nobodies in camp though.

Notes for the psychics: Nothing much. Riku is a little in love with just about everyone he cares about, but he's pretty obvious about all of that. He is sexually attracted to both Sora and Kairi and knows it, he also is to Axel, albeit it's different with him, and Saya too but again different with her. Also he's little terrified of Roxas, but avoids letting that on. No huge secrets wandering around in his skull though. His thoughts tend to be quiet and ironic and occasionally bittersweet.
