He can hear helicopter blades, can smell blood and fuel and magic flung wild, and grits his teeth; not this man, not this man. In the end, he was not the death of this man.

I love it. Poor Marcone, hurting so badly and so filled with guilt over what happened...and at the same time he's trying so desperately to be strong. And yes, he would worry about bringing ruin and destruction to a decent man. And of course Michael wouldn't worry about that at all--not because he doesn't recognize the possibility but because he owes Marcone. Michael would do the honorable thing, and let God take care of his reputation.

What I love is how well you've caught Marcone. He's a deeply dangerous man in a lethal and immoral business. And yet he's also human--in pain, traumatized by the Denarians, desperately lonely. It's wonderful. You've done a beautiful job of capturing the man's duality.

Very well done.

Your way with words is so heartstoppingly brilliant...

The way Marcone speaks, and Michael's quiet but sincere concern for everyone around him, and the way you describe the snow, the warmth of the shop... the "mainstays of male bonding" line!

Absolute love for this story. ♥

Now here are two characters I wouldn't have expected to see together in a fic! Maybe that's what's so interesting about their encounter. I like your Marcone voice; he's obviously hurting inside, but still maintaining as much control as he can. It makes me want him to have someone he can let his guard down with...if only under certain circumstances. But I'm probably biased. :-)
