Apparently a lot of the (otherwise perfectly eligible) students have been simply scared off by the tough talk already. I suppose the Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders will be laughing all the way to the bank. Go May!
Certainly, I got the impression from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch (NZ) that they are watching developments in the UK with great interest.
A lot of UK students are looking towards European unis because of the fees being cheaper - you'd pay about NZ$ 25k pa for a degree in Chch. Having said that, it'd be great if you did come out there!
No me neither, still hopefully the AV vote will help show the shits that the writing is on the wall for them. If only Wisconsin was higher up the news here people might take notice and think how certain things may run in paralllel.
I'd like to think that this was part of some evil scheme to weaken the UK universities' powerbase*, rather than just being a half-arsed piece of knee-jerk, reactionary legislation. However, I see nothing to suggest that it's anything other than a crippling misjudgement by the ConDems.
* because at least they'd have thought about it, you know; not because I have anything against UK universities.
It's probably partly inspired by the wish to downsize the university sector, but I don't think that's the main cause. Seeing easy targets so that the electorate can be impressed with government action is a more likely inspiration.
Well there is possibly some truth to the idea of reducing the universites' powerbase because universities produce some people who can think and question things like right of the rich and powerful to do as they please. But mostly I think its pandering to the fools who read the Fail as a way of seeming to do something about the lack of jobs created by the banking created recession and all these public sector cuts stolen by immigrants.
Bastardry upon bastardry. It's interesting, in a clinical way, how it wears you down and wears you out, so that I end up being so relieved it won't affect me that it diminishes my anger. I guess that's how divide and rule works.
Yep. But then I think about how it could have affected me, and how it affects my friends, and how other similar things can wreck my life any time, and the anger flares right back again.
