If I got it right, he hadn´t planned to take part in the race, he had promised his wife to retire from racing after the wedding. But the annoying coach and the evil opponent made him change his mind, he wanted to prove that he was still "the number one".
Anyway, that wife was an idiot for letting him get a bike an go training. When you are honeymooning with a guy like Jack... you get him locked in your cabin, (with you inside, sure) and you throw the key overboard... am I wrong? ;)
