Jensen Ackles stands at the end of the hallway, and watches as the three men and one woman talk to a distressed looking doctor. He wouldn’t have noticed them but they are standing in front of his brother’s door, and it makes him remember when he had seen the same scene play out a million times in his head when he was here because of his mother and father. He doesn’t like revisiting that feeling and silently wishes he would have waited on his other brother.
He continues watching, not walking any closer, and notices when a tall man with shaggy hair looks up and sees him. He watches as he glances at something in his hand, leans over and says something to the man with black hair and beard before he starts walking towards Jensen.
Jensen glances left and right, trying to find an escape from the man walking towards him with a smile. Instantly he deflates, he knows he can’t run from bad news, so he stands his ground and waits for the man to grow closer.
“Special Agent Jared Padalecki, NCIS,” the man with slanted hazel eyes tells Jensen as he extends his hand. Jensen stares at the hand, not even thinking about taking it. He knows where this is leading and doesn’t want to be friendly to the man whose going to delivery another tear to his already holey heart. “You’re Jensen Ackles, are you not?” The man asks, ducking his head slightly to be able to see Jensen better.
“Yes,” Jensen answers, as he pulls his arms over his chest, hugging himself waiting for the blow.
“Gunnery Sergeant Jacob Ackles brother?” Jared continues, making sure he’s got the right man.
“Yes,” Jensen once more replies.
“I have some questions I need to ask you sir,” Jared continues pulling out a small notepad.
“I’ll answer your questions,” a voice behind Jensen calls out, walking up and standing beside of Jensen, “I’m Josh Ackles,” he introduces as he holds out his hand. After shaking Jared’s hand, he turns to his brother, “Jen, go get some coffee while I deal with this.” Jensen nods his head, and begins walking down the hall trying to remember where the coffee machine was the last time he was here when he was fifteen.
Josh and Jared watches as Jensen walks away, “Do you know about your other brother?” Jared asks, his attention returning to the other Ackles brother.
“Yes, I just got the call, I told Jensen to wait for me but he never listens,” Josh tells the agent, frowning.
“So Jensen knows also?” Jared questions more for himself then the investigation.
“No,” Josh says shaking his head, “Jensen didn’t need to know while he was alone.”
“You’re being awful protective of him,” Jared observes, writing something in his notepad.
“Since he was fifteen,” Josh tells him. “Do you know what happened?” Josh asks as his eyes fall on the people in front of his brother’s room.
“Not sure sir,” Jared replies, “You’ll have to talk to the doctor but he probably won’t know anything until an autopsy,” Jared tells him sadly, his heart pulling for the two brothers.
“If you don’t mind,” Josh tells the taller man, “I’m going to go speak with the doctor,” Josh doesn’t wait for an answer, just moves around Jared and down the hall.
“Doctor,” Josh calls out, leaving the tall agent behind him, “Can I speak with you?” he asks as he draws closer to the small group of people.
“I’ll be with you in a minute,” the doctor tiredly replies.
“No, you’ll be with me now,” Josh says walking straight up to the man, “You are standing in front of my brother’s room, and I don’t care what you’re telling these agents, I will be dealt with now,” Josh commands.
“It’s alright Doctor Payne,” the older agent says to the dark complected man, “He’s right, he’s family, we’ll finish our questions later,” Just like that the man walks off with another man and woman following him.
“What happened doctor?” Josh asks staring into the man’s eyes. He knows he only has one living brother now, and he wants to know what happened to the other.
“Your brother was admitted with a gun shot wound to the chest,” the doctor tells him sadly, “He was in surgery for two hours, and we thought he was going to be fine.”
“But?” Josh questions, he’s dealt with this before and knows there’s a but, and doesn’t really want to wait for the doctor to try and find the best words to tell him that his family just became smaller than it already was.
“But twenty minutes after the operation to remove the fragments, he coded. I’m sorry Mr. Ackles, we tried to revive him but it was useless.”
Josh nods sadly, he doesn’t blame the doctor; he accepted that doctors were just men twelve years ago with the death of his parents, “Can I see him?” Josh questions instead.
“That’s not a problem sir,” the doctor replies softly, he always hated telling the members of his patient’s family there was nothing the hospital could do.
“I’m going to go find my other brother,” Josh tells him. He doesn’t want to leave Jensen by himself, and he doesn’t want Jensen to see Jake without him by his side. He’ll tell Jake goodbye as soon as he finds his youngest brother.
Josh passes the group of agents waiting for the elevator as he goes in search of his brother. He doesn’t hate them, but he had to protect his brother and answer their ridiculous questions the night his parents died and doesn’t really want to repeat that at the moment. As he walks past, he’s stopped when the older man steps out of the group circle and grabs his arm and pushes a card at him, “If you need anything,” he tells Josh, "Give me a call.” Josh nods, and continues down the hall to find Jensen.
“Jensen,” Josh softly calls at his brother as he walks towards him with his head down.
“Jake’s gone, isn’t he?” Jensen questions after looking at his brother’s face.
“I’m sorry man,” Josh says as he wraps his arms around his brother, trying to make him feel safe like he’s done ever since he became Jensen’s guardian.
“He wasn’t supposed to be here,” Jensen cries into his brother’s shoulder. “Did you know he was in the states?” he questions, his voice skipping from the sobbing.
“He wasn’t,” Josh answers sadly as he runs his hand up and down his brother’s back, “I didn’t know Jen. I would have protected him better if I did.”
“It’s not your fault, Josh,” Jensen tells his brother pulling back and through teary, red, puffy eyes, looks at his brother, “It was never your fault.”
“I’m the oldest, I’m supposed to protect you two,” Josh whispers to Jensen sounding defeated.
“It wasn’t your fault,” Jensen repeats holding his brother tighter, “It wasn’t your fault.”
