004. Paper

There were a lot of things about being a doctor that appealed to Cameron. She got to help people by improving their health (or making their death less painful if worse came to worse), she met many intelligent people every day, she made a decent amount of money to live off of, and there was always someone she could help. And despite what House might say about her need to help people feel better and less alone, she was good at what she did.

It was House that showed her the other side of being a doctor, the one you don’t see on television and the parts they forget to mention in class. That hospital politics could end your career faster than a malpractice suit, that there was always mounds of paperwork waiting for you at the end of the day, that good doctors like Wilson could get dismissed if someone applied enough pressure (she still gets angry when someone refers to a hospital as a business), that sometimes being unethical is the only way to figure out what’s wrong with a patient or to cure them.

House was an asshole who didn’t concern himself with guidelines, laws, or even common decency when the need arose; but he was the best doctor she knew, and unfortunately he knew it too.

She just wished he’d answer his own e-mail sometimes.
