I wish people could have rational discussions about fandom without taking it personally when someone disagrees with their ideas ( Read more... )

It's not an evil job, silly goose, it's a wonderful job that's just a lot of stress. *ruffles your hair*

I love playing the canon game. I wish other people did, too.

That's one of the roots of Fandom in general, Fandom with a capital 'f'. Sure, some of it started with writing Star Trek stories in the early 70's. But way back in the day, before that, the "how do we make all these contradictory threads knit together into an actual sock?" meme was started by the Sherlock Holmes fans who call themselves the Baker Street Irregulars. According to Asimov, who was one (not surprisingly), one way to be a really good member (I can't remember if it was required or not) was to write an essay on some 'point' or other like "Watson was a woman" or "Holmes had an affair with his landlady" or whatever. The purpose wasn't fanfic-oriented, just argument and speculation.

That's a part of fandom that I enjoy very much, using canon to 'prove' things, but I feel like some people are so fanfic oriented that their response is just "that would make an interesting story", whereas shatfat and I like jawing over that stuff whether or not it produces fanfic.

I have sometimes used the argument that "all fan fiction is AU" just as a conversational point with gen fans who insist they are "writing canon", whereas we slashers quite clearly do not care about canon.

Hmph.

Of course, trying to play the canon game with people of that mindset is impossible.

>>>Fanfic, for the most part and unless it's AU, is extrapolated from canon, not deviated. (I hope that made sense.)

Good description - yes, that makes perfect sense.

Well, in that case, it works, as long as the slash itself is *in character*. When people try to use the 'it's all outside of canon anyway' idea as an excuse to write out of character, that's when it makes me bang my inner brain against walls.

I think you and I had already discussed this on AIM anyway, though :P

LOL, this post really amused me:-) It's so true!

Instead, what happens is that people can't bear to hear ideas supported that disagree with their own. They take it as a personal *insult* that someone would have the nerve to actually *support* a dissenting idea with evidence. (It's apparently bad enough to disagree with people, but to actually try and justify your idea is unforgivable.)

Yeah, just go into some fandoms and try to support a slash pairing. Sometimes you can get stoned, 'cause "my heroes are no fucking queers!" :P

...if you point out that someone's out of character in a story or that a particular incident is contradicted by canon, the reply is just that "all fanfic deviates from canon."

Yeah, and sometimes you can be accused of being deviant yourself:P Sorry for being maybe too bitter after my futile attempts to support B/D in CZ. But your post is so fitting for this situation as well.

*finally back on LJ* :-)

my heroes are no fucking queers!

Someday someone will invent some really cool characters, and hook everyone on their awesomeness, and then some of them will turn out to be gay. And because it's canon, people will have to realize they just liked the characters anyway, before they knew they weren't "allowed" to.

I miss you, by the way. Sorry I'm so bad about keeping in touch. Just shoot me an email or something & tell me what's going on with you lately.

I did think of you a few months ago when we discovered that at Lollicup (a tea... thing over here; not really a teahouse because it's so brightly lit and also sells frozen drinks) has huge glass teapots and huge glass teacups to match. Very, very pretty.
