Last night, Miss Bella and Sophie between them managed to slay an intruder into our house; the DH found them facing off over possession of its wee little corpse, and deprived them of it

*ggg* I can imagine so well! When I woke on Monday, Findis was very actively playing with something I first thought to be a play mouse, throwing it up in the air, pawing it, grabbing it, carrying it a bit further and so on... only when it landed near my foot I realised it was a small vole. Eeek! It was rather difficult to take it away from her - but I don't care for a mangled mouse being lost somewhere eventually... when she eats them, she can keep them. This one must have been brought inside by Skrållan, who took over the duty to teach the young ones their jobs: she already brought dead mouses a few times and laid them close to where the kittens were; a behaviour she's not usually showing.
This mouse is the first we've seen getting in in a few years. But with a terrier and a cat in the same house, there's really no chance for a mouse!
Sophie will hunt the voles in the yard and chase the squirrels, but Miss Bella is not allowed outdoors. This is a matter of much grievance to her, but it's just not safe. Our yard is fenced, but it wouldn't prevent her climbing over, and in this town she wouldn't last long.
(She gets her "outside fix" on our screened in front porch. She can enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and birdwatching without being in danger of getting lost.)
Most of our cats are useless as mousers. *g* They have the instincts and desire, but not the skills. I think those have to be taught by their mothers, and if their mothers don't know either or they were taken away too early, then usually they're going to just be wannabes.
However, Freddie has actually killed 3-4 mice. Mind you, he doesn't know how to do it quickly, with the bite to the neck. He just pummels them to death. I think they die from shock more than anything. When we find them, they're always completely intact, no blood or guts or anything. (Fortunately!)
I remember the one mouse that Helo got while Merlin was with us, and they were such a team! One would go on one side of the couch and the other would go on the other side. And it's so much fun and drama for them! :D
LOL! The poor mouse really didn't stand a chance. I'm glad I didn't realize what they were doing untill was over, though. It always kind of grosses me out.
