That is interesting! I guess I never really thought much about copyright infringement in regards to my fan-writing, maybe because most of mine is poetry inspired by, rather than stories actually about someone else's characters. I know that Tolkien hoped to inspire others to flesh out his creation, but I can see how a writer would feel protective of their own "children". But as long as the writing is done from a loving and respectful perspective, and the proper disclaimers are made upfront, it seems to me it should be ok. Right? :)
