[Messages] then [Sam's Quarters] [Sam/Bones]

When the door had shut behind Jim, Sam staggered over to it and locked him out, then back over to the bed where he passed out.

Sam woke up enough a few hours later to know he wouldn't make it to work that day. Not wanting to arouse suspicion, he sent a note to the Doctor.

Private to:Dr. Leonard McCoy

I will not be at work today.

Bones read the note the next morning from one of the computer terminals in Sickbay. Quickly pulling up Sam's medical record, he frowned. Sam hadn't come in to see anyone, so it wasn't illness. He wondered if something was wrong.

Bones tried twice, but Sam didn't answer his communicator. After a couple hours, he told the other doctor on duty that he'd be back in a little while.

He wasn't worried, not yet, but - the fact that Sam wasn't responding bothered him. Signaling at the door of his old rooms, he waited to see if he'd be let in.

In his daze, Sam had not thought ahead to lock McCoy out as he had done his brother, and the doors opened for the doctor.

Sam was still passed out on the bed. He had managed to take off his shoes, but was otherwise still in the clothes he had worn to work the day before.

"Wha- Sam!" Bones called out, rushing over to the bed where Sam was sprawled. Pulling out his scanner, he began checking him. No concussion, bruised ribs, two of them cracked. Contusions on his face. Giving a little sigh, Bones sat on the bed and released the breath he was holding, recognizing the signs of a fist fight - something he was all too familiar with.

Pulling the hypo out, Bones fixed a dose to wake Sam up so he could find out what happened, and pushing his hair gently off his neck, pressed it into Sam's neck.

Sam started as the medication woke him, then relaxed when he realized it was McCoy. "Hey," he mumbled as he relaxed again. Everything was sore, but nothing hurt too badly.
