[Makeshift Brig]---[Openish]

Sam couldn't say he was glad to be back in the cramped white room off of Medbay. The tour had been fun. Maybe a little bit long and a tad boring at times, but Jim loved this ship and listening to his long winded descriptions of the ship's spaces was but a small indulgence ( Read more... )

All during the day, Bones thought about the conversation he'd had with Kirk the night before about their prisoner, his brother Sam. It all made sense now, one of the private rooms near his sickbay locked up ( ... )

Sam emerged from the small attached bathroom still in the process of pulling his shirt back on. After he had gone to take a sonic shower after George had left. Spotting Bones standing at the door, Sam stopped abruptly at the threshold and quickly finished pulling his shirt back on.

"Hello?" He said, cautious about the sudden appearance of this man he didn't know. The man had to have been important for the guards to let him past.

"Good afternoon," Bones said quietly, taking another step into the room. He looked remarkably like Kirk, could see hints of both George and Winona in his face and bearing. "Hope I'm not bothering you right now, but I wanted to stop by and meet you. I'm Dr McCoy," he added, extending a hand toward the prisoner.

Sam moved toward Bones and accepted his hand. "Nice to meet you. I'm Sam Kirk," he said, shaking McCoy's hand firmly, "but I'm guessing you already knew that. Please come in--take a seat."

He motioned towards the unmade bed as there was no place else to sit in the room.

"Thanks," Leonard replied, setting back on one end of the bed, more stiffly than his usual slouch.

He gazed back at the other man a moment before speaking. "I could make some bullshit excuse about being here to check on your medical status, make sure you're not carrying some space plague, but truth is," Bones gave him a small shrug, "I've heard a lot about you and I wanted to meet you."

"Well, here I am." Sam shrugged his shoulders and slouched against the wall opposite the bed. He could only hope that this Dr. McCoy had been hearing about him from Jim or George and not Winona. "I'm sorry to say I haven't heard about you..."

"I'm a friend of Jim's," McCoy replied, leaving it at that. "He's glad to see you again."

Somehow Sam doubted that he was just a friend of Jim's. Maybe a best friend, a mentor, or a lover, but never just "a friend".

"He pretty much said as much when he came to see me earlier." Sam smiled softly, slightly weary of this man.

"The thing is," Bones continued, "I've heard about you, like I said. I was just wondering who you were, and where you've been."

"I'm a pirate." Sam laughed. "That's the simplest way to put it. I've been doing it since I ran away from home for good. I figure that at this point it is the best answer to that question."

Sam pushed off of the wall and began to pace back and forth. "I guess I'm also Jim's brother and George's son. There are a lot of answers to that question... I don't even have them all and I doubt you've got time for all the ones I do have."

Bones hadn't missed how Winona was left off that declaration but he didn't argue - the last thing he wanted to do now was start in on that. "Pirates are criminals. That how you see yourself?"

"I've got some time," Bones told him, eying him warily as well. "Not sure you'll like all my answers."

The smile which had been weakly showing on Sam's face was now gone.

"I've committed a lot of crimes in my day. I'll freely admit to that. I've even been sent to prison colonies a couple of times..."

"I may not like them, but, since you're Jim's friend, I hope I can count on you to tell the truth."

"Didn't quite answer that question," Bones said, not surprised to see the smile fading. He wasn't in a particularly good mood about all of this.

"I'm not gonna bullshit you, but don't think I'm gonna tell you all his secrets, either."

"I do think of myself as a pirate. There are different types, mind you, but I think of myself as one of them."

"I don't want you telling me any if you're doing this behind his back. Jim's secrets are his to tell."

This McCoy guy certainly didn't beat around the bush Sam noted.

Bones ignored the 'behind Jim's back' comment. This wasn't exactly covert - he just hadn't told him about it, mostly because he hadn't decided to come until he was standing outside the door.

Jim's secrets. Like he'd spill any of those. "That they are..." Bones answered softly. "So, pirate Sam Kirk, you mentioned George earlier. You guys have a nice reunion?"
