Oooo interesting.

Am slightly suprised now that there isn't a recordable alarm on the mainstream market. As well as for children it would be useful for people-with-dementia - one time when I acidently set of the smoke alarms when cooking Mum went and answered the door (to be fair to her the entry-phone in her building sounds very alarm-y)

I've read before about people being so confused (by smoke/smoke inhalation) that they do things like fail to find the door in their own room. I wonder to what extent the not-being-properly-awake also affects that.

I'm pleased to hear you were not, in fact, conflagrating.

Then there was then term when I was 12 in the Junior House, where something went wrong with the alarm and it went off about 10 times in a few weeks. There was also the requirement for one of the house staff to stand on one staircase or in a doorway shouting "I'm a fire! You can't come past! Go another way!", which led to lots of confusion.

In retrospect it was probably good as for planned drills, the house staff were awake still. And knowing where your shoes and a warm layer are is a good lesson for life.

My children certainly sleep through fire alarms and CO detector alarms at home. I do wonder if work ones have been made quieter in recent years, possibly in response to fears about causing hearing loss, as a few years ago we had some at work where everyone was just going "What's that noise? ... Do you think it could be a fire alarm? Ooh, maybe?" If 100 awake adults can't instantly realise it's an alarm, you're doing it wrong!

Erk and interesting about children not hearing fire alarms in general. It's not the sort of thing most young children get to test.

We have a deaf fire alarm in the house now (vibrate pad which also does doorbell etc, strobe and the alarms) but didn't get it until 2010. I don't know for sure it'll wake me in the night although we keep saying Kim is going to set it off to see... I suspect it will wake me cos the pad is vicious and I rarely sleep through that.
