Saturday I got up at daft o'clock to celebrate the 25th anniversary of my driving test - I caught the 6.00am train to Victoria, breakfasted in the Regency Cafe and was the first person through the doors of the Lowry exhibition. When I went to the London Pride with dmw, gummitch and A a couple of years ago, I was left wondering the extent to which it was a parade or a political march or some mixture of both, and whether onlookers were there to gawk or support. Eventually, yes, some unaffiliated people came down as a ragtag group at the end.
I haven't been to any Pride marches in Australia. The queer friends I've had in Adelaide didn't really feel part of the community and have all moved interstate now anyway. A bi friend did go to the Sydney one, but burst into tears when the bi float was booed by onlookers, an anecdote which has not really encouraged me to investigate further.
