... my early night was slightly delayed by my printing out a couple of Grauniad cryptic crosswords, having discovered such things are possible. It was further delayed by an attempt to solve Saturday's prize crossword, inexplicably jumping to the unstated theme (The Tempest) by spotting PROSPER as shortened PROSPERO, and getting stuck finally on ( Read more... )

But could be STANDARD PACE (see below), as in cricket, or marching. I can't spot the monetary cue in the clue.

I don't see why there needs to be a monetary cue in the clue - 'standard rate' isn't a specifically/exclusively monetary term and all manner of things have standard rates.
