‘I’m so happy we’re spending Christmas together. It will be so wonderful,’ Hermione said, taking the turkey out of the oven and checking whether it was cooked to perfection. ‘And after dinner, I have a very special surprise for you,’ she winked at Draco.

‘I’m afraid that this year it won’t a ‘clothes optional’ thing. We have a guest,’ Draco said slowly, ‘my mother is coming to visit us for Christmas dinner. Father couldn’t come as he has fallen ill with Bolivian Pox after his business trip to South America.’

‘What?’ Hermione asked, her hand quivering so bad that she dropped the knife she had used to check the turkey. ‘Why didn’t you tell me this earlier? Gods… I look like a slob and your mother doesn’t like me already and I cooked just this for dinner and…’ Hermione was running out of breath. She had always been afraid to encounter Draco’s parents, as they were surely still engrossed in Pureblood supremacy ideologies.

‘Love, you look gorgeous, and you’ve cooked dinner enough for six people. So don’t worry. My mother’s nice. And I promise everything’s going to be fine, not a disaster like last year with your parents,’ Draco said soothingly and wrapped his arms around the quivering witch.

Last year, he had dutifully gone with her to visit her parents. Disaster was a mild word to describe. They were very unhappy to see Draco as their beloved daughter’s boyfriend, as they believed everything the Weasleys had told them about the Malfoys and how bad that family was. At one moment, they had even wondered whether Hermione needed to see a psychiatrist to check whether she was sane.

Draco had just whisked Hermione away from her parent’s house and eased her tears with kisses and caresses. They had spent all of Christmas time in bed, enjoying each other.

His mother’s owl stating that she wishes to visit him and Hermione on Christmas Eve for dinner had come just an hour ago, and if there was one thing Draco couldn’t say no to-it was his mother’s wishes.

‘I will embarrass myself and you will leave after this, right?’ Hermione whispered, her eyes on the brink of being tearful.

‘I love you so much and nothing is going to make me leave you,’ he said and kissed her gently.

The doorbell rang and they broke the kiss. Hermione’s heart was beating rapidly, her nerves on the edge.

Draco went to get the door and Hermione set the table, now for three, with a quivering wand-hand.

Narcissa Malfoy was an amazingly gorgeous witch, and Hermione felt like a plan Jane compared to her.

‘Hello my dear, I finally get to meet you!’ Narcissa smiled at Hermione and presented her and intricate box, ‘I brought some pudding for dessert. Your dinner smells fabulous!’

Hermione took the box and thanked Narcissa, wondering what more was to come.

The first bit of dinner conversation was surprisingly pleasant as it seemed that Draco’s mother wasn’t all that ice cold.

‘It’s so wonderful to see you two together,’ Narcissa gushed. ’Ever since my little darling started Hogwarts he’d always talk about you. Hermione this, Hermione that… I knew it was concealed liking, though,’ she smiled at her son who blushed deeply.

‘Then I persuaded Lucius to not sign the betrothal agreement for Draco and Millicent. I told him I was afraid that the Bullstrodes' troll blood would interfere with the dormant Malfoy veela gene… when in fact I hoped that Draco would get his act together and pursue you.’

‘You wanted him to be with me?’ Hermione asked surprised.

‘Yes, he needs a witch who is brilliant and keeps him on his toes. And you’re gorgeous too, it helps. My dear Hermione, if I may call you that? Any spoiled floozy would give my little angel misery.’

‘Thank you for your kind words, Mrs. Malfoy.’ Hermione answered, even more stunned than before.

‘Please, call me Cissy, we’re almost family! Well, we will be once the boy does what his father wants him to do.’

‘And what’s that?’ Draco asked looking up from his plate.

‘Of course marry Hermione! Lucius thinks that it is important that you two marry as soon as possible!’

‘I thought that when father said he wants me to start a family he wanted me to enter some sort of betrothal, that’s why I avoided him all the time,’ Draco confessed.

‘Silly boy! He wants you to marry Hermione so she is the wife you deserve.’

‘Why didn’t he tell me that right away?’

‘Because he thought he was subtle enough about it for you to get the hint. He’s just as stubborn as you are,’ Cissy said and smiled.

‘Wouldn’t it be nice if we could throw an engagement party right after Christmas?’ Narcissa gushed, already envisioning the ballroom’s layout.

‘But Draco hasn’t said anything about marriage… I don’t think I have any say in that…’
‘’Of course I want to marry you!’ Draco said looking at his love.’ I was just worried you’d reject me as you’d not want me to be yours forever.’

‘Of course I want you, I love you!’ she exclaimed and leaned in to kiss him.

‘Wonderful. So when do we want the wedding to happen? I think winter weddings are wonderful.’

‘Mother, let me first propose to my witch properly,’ Draco smiled and summoned a small box which had been gathering dust in his drawer since last Christmas. Why had he been so afraid of rejection?

‘Hermione, my love, will you make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?’ Draco asked her, offering her the ring.

‘Yes,’ she breathed, letting him slip the platinum ring with a diamond heart on her finger.

‘That’s my best Christmas present ever,’ Cissy said and sniffed. ‘My baby is finally happy.’
