“We’ll need someone to bind the oath. It can’t be your friend or mine.”
“I’ll get someone. Just meet me in the owlery at midnight and I’ll bring a binder with me.”
Two shadows separated and went opposite directions.
The huge clock at the front of the school chimed eleven times when two figures mounted the top of the stairs to the owlery. Hannah Abbott had drawn the short straw for patrol that evening and found herself with the taciturn Malfoy, walking the halls with nary a word between them.
When he had headed out of doors to the grounds, however, she had stopped dead still in the doorway. “Malfoy, it’s the Heads job to cover the outside of the school. We only patrol the hallways.”
He shrugged. “If you don’t want to do the job, Abbott, go on back to Hufflepuff and I’ll do it alone. I’ll have to inform the Heads and your head of house, but that’s up to you.”
With a huff, she followed him around toward the Quidditch pitch, down the bridge, then toward the owlery that stood alone in the full moonlight, a sentinel in the dark.
The stairs were uneven and she was breathing hard by the time that she reached the top. Malfoy was slightly fitter than she was; he was barely winded. She looked inside and turned to leave when he pulled her in the door and slammed it behind her, locking her in.
She started to protest when he turned his wand on her and silenced her with a wordless spell. “All I want you to do is perform an Unbreakable Vow for me, Abbott. Just be the witness. That’s it.”
When she nodded, a figure detached itself from the wall and stepped lightly through the droppings and pellets on the floor. A feminine hand came out a long sleeved cloak to grasp Malfoy's hand and Hannah put her wand atop the joined hands. She tried to see into the depths of the hood but was unable to penetrate the gloom when Malfoy turned his ethereal eyes on her, gleaming in the moonlight.
“I-I’m not quite sure what to do,” Hannah confessed and Malfoy sneered.
“All you do is witness the agreement. Your wand will do the rest.”
He turned back to the cloaked figure, then down at their clasped hands. “Do you promise to keep this secret from everyone who holds you dear to them?”
“I do,” came the answer from deep inside the snood. Hannah’s wand shot out a stream of copper ribbon that twined around the joined wrists.
“Will you deny everything if you are ever asked about it directly?”
“I will.” Another ribbon, this one silver, joined the first.
“Do you agree that this will not be used for coercion or manipulation now or in the future?”
“I agree.” A golden cord leaped out of Hannah’s wand and twined around the others, then they disappeared into the skin of the two being bound.
Hannah was about to speak again when Malfoy turned back to face her. He pointed his wand at her and whispered, “Obliviate.” Her eyes went blank and he turned back to the cloaked figure. “You have the coin. Wait for my message.”
He led Hannah back to the Great Hall by the shortest distance and the figure melted away in the darkness.
A week later, the coin heated and he waited, pacing back and forth in the Room of Requirement. Finally, the door opened and she sauntered in without a care, closing it securely behind her and performing several warding and locking charms before she turned to face him.
“What took you so long?”
“Well I can’t just say hey boys, have to go and snog Malfoy. You know that.” Hermione Granger tossed her robes over the end of the cozy loveseat that sat in front of a roaring fireplace before she crossed the room to take his hands.
“Come sit down. We took great pains to keep this secret. Let’s make it worth it, okay?”
He looked down at her and nodded, then bent his head to claim those sweet, Mudblood lips that would be the death of him if anyone found out.
