“Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter - to-morrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther….And one fine morning -
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
-The Great Gatsby
“You know I love you.”
The words on his lips still made her shiver. His lips traced patterns, slow and hot against the trembling flesh of her neck.
“I know as well as anything,” she whispered against his ear, “that I love you back.”
Cool, centuries-old stone pressed into her back. Pure, tall warmth ranged the length of her front, holding her steady. She wouldn’t have it any other way - not any other way.
Draco’s lips met her pulse and she shivered, arching her head back till he could see the tiny raise and dip, raise and dip of flesh where her heart branched out to meet her mind. He pressed his thumb to its heat, his eyes sweeping up her face to rest on hers.
“Scared love?” He mouthed against her lips.
“Not scared, no,” she breathed.
“Don’t you worry,” he kissed her softly, cradling her flushed cheeks in his smooth palms. “I’ll always be here to keep that heart of yours racing.”
“Hermione!”
There was a loud rap on the door of her bedroom. She flinched. It was Harry.
“I’ll be down in a second Harry! Just give me a moment!”
She watched the door wide-eyed, listening closely for the sound of retreating footsteps before turning back to the scene before her. Two small, faint blue figures embracing atop the glassy surface of her past. They faded before her eyes, sinking into the depths of the stone basin with a wrenching sort of finality. She slid to her knees, smoothed her robes, and shoved the basin under her four-poster. A few drops splattered out and hit the floor, gleaming where they stuck. She struggled to her feet, righted the covers to hide the light, and walked to the door, ready as she never would be to meet Harry and her present.
